9 body parts that are (now) useless

Swivelling ears, tails, third eyelids… we humans used to be so pretty.

THE HUMAN BODY is a mind-blowingly intricate and beautiful machine…. but there are still bits and pieces we don’t need hanging around.

They may have served us well once but, at some point during human evolution, they lost their usefulness.

(Note: if you don’t believe in evolution you may not want to read this… maybe just read this, instead.)

9 body parts that are (now) useless
1 / 9
  • Plica semilunaris - aka 'the third eyelid'

The plica semilunaris are found near the tear ducts and are remnants of a 'third eyelid'. It’s thought it might have once been used to push debris from the eye.
  • Darwin's Point (Darwin's Tubercle)

Darwin’s Point is a small fold of skin towards the top of the ear, which is found in about 10 per cent of humans. It’s believed that it could have once been a part of a joint that allowed the ear to swivel or flop downwards. Pic by jemsweb/Flickr
  • Vomeronasal Organ

The vomeronasal organ is a non-functioning specialised sensory system found in the nose which, it seems, allowed humans to smell pheromones. Image: brains the head/Flickr
  • Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth were very helpful when we had poorer dental hygiene and larger jaws... these days, not so much. However, an extremely lucky 35 per cent of people now never develop them. Image by Steve Montgomery/Flickr
  • Auricular Muscles

Auricular muscles once allowed your ears to swivel around to the direction of a sound. Presumably, at some point, we realised we could just turn our heads... and now the best you can do with them is make your ears wiggle. Image by benjaminasmith/Flickr
  • Coccyx

The coccyx is a remnant of the tails our ancestors once sported (although, there have been modern cases of babies being born with tails, too). It just sits there nowadays, not doing much. But if you break it, it damn well hurts. Image by seriykotik1970/Flickr
  • Erector Pili

When we had more body hair, the erector pili made our hairs stand up – either to provide insulation or to make us seem bigger to predators. Now they just give us goosebumps. Image by [ rachael ]/Flickr
  • The appendix

The appendix is an attachment to the large intestine but no longer has any role in digestion. It’s thought that humans probably used it when we ate more plant-based foods. Image by tornatore/Flickr
  • Male nipples

All human foetuses develop nipples in the womb before their gender is determined. Men, of course, don’t need them – but just try taking their nipples away from them. They won’t stand for it. Image by physiognomist/Flickr
