A MAN WAS subjected to an assault on a Dublin to Belfast train yesterday, during what police are treating as a hate crime.

The PSNI say they were alerted to an assault that took place on the Dublin to Belfast train at approximately 10.30pm on Saturday 22 December.

Four males assaulted a 51-year-old male and shouted homophobic abuse whilst they were travelling between Newry and Portadown, said the police.

The victim was attacked and had his laptop smashed during the incident. He attended a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for a broken nose and minor head injuries. The attackers also took his Nano iPod and two sets of earphones.

Hate crime

These males got off the train in Portdown, said police. This attack is being treated as a hate crime.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the attack or anyone who was travelling on the Enterprise train between Dublin and Belfast on Saturday evening last to contact them at Mahon Road on 0845 600 8000 or phone the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Hate crime is unacceptable, no one deserves to experience it and no one deserves to get away with it. To stop it, report it,” said the PSNI, which offers a Police Minorities Liaison Officer (MLO) to give confidential advice and support to all victims of hate crime.
