Burglars trick elderly man by pretending to check drains while cash stolen from home

It’s believed that a second person rifled through the downstairs while the householder was distracted by the first man.

AN 84-YEAR-OLD man was targeted in a burglary when a man called to his home, saying he had been sent to do work in the back garden.

It happened on Sydney Street West in north Belfast just after 10.30am yesterday morning.

The man gained entry to the house by telling the resident he had been sent to do some work in the rear garden.

The householder accompanied this man to the garden where he appeared to check the drains. The man then suddenly ran off when he came back inside the house.

Detective Sergeant Keith Wilson said, “The resident, finding this odd, then checked his property and discovered a sum of money had been stolen.

At this time we believe that a second person had entered the home and rifled through the downstairs while the householder was distracted by the first male.

“We are appealing for the public’s help in identifying these criminals. If you were in the area of Sydney Street West on Saturday morning and saw two suspicious men or anything else that could help us, please call Musgrave Reactive and Organised Crime on 101.”
