Dana vows to continue Áras campaign despite new allegations over family members

Dana Rosemary Scallon insists she will continue her Presidential campaign in spite of new allegations about members of her family.

DANA ROSEMARY SCALLON has insisted she will continue her presidential campaign, despite the emergence of new allegations regarding members of her family.

In an interview on TV3 News this evening, Scallon said the new allegations were “of a sexual nature” and involved a member of her family.

“We were under tremendous pressure, within my family, from a freelance journalist,” she said, referring to the statement she made at the end of RTÉ’s Prime Time debate on Wednesday evening.

She had been approached by that journalist, who was compiling the story, on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the RTÉ debate.

The journalist said the story would appear in a double-page spread in a newspaper the following day. Scallon declined to name the journalist or the newspaper involved.

I have been stressing that this is malicious lies and it is of a sexual nature regarding a member of my family.

I know it is not true… because the first time it was ever raised was in a court case in a family dispute, never before. It was not acted upon at that time. The second time it was raised was in the middle of my election campaign, with the obvious desire of trying to destroy my character.

Dana said the fact that the allegation had not been acted upon, despite its mention in court, was enough to assure her that it was untrue. She added she had “suspicions” as to who was behind the new emergence of the allegations.

“I don’t know of any sane person who would ever do this,” she said. ”I did say that if it were to happen again, I would step down. And I truly felt this was an attempt to make me stand down.”

‘Nothing to be ashamed of’

She said she would not be withdrawing from the election as a result of the new allegations, however – asserting she would not be “broken” by the rumour and that she had “nothing to be ashamed of”.

“I cannot bend to bullying and intimidation or blackmail, or any form of pressure upon me.”

The interview is available in full on the TV3 website.

Scallon had not been seen on the campaign trail since her dramatic statement on the Prime Time debate on Wednesday in which she referred to allegations about her family “of a most untrue, malicious and vile nature”.

Scallon spent much of yesterday in talks with her legal team here in Ireland and the US regarding the allegations which were levelled against a family member on Wednesday.

A number of newspapers in Ireland are reportedly aware of the allegations but are not publishing them for legal reasons.

  • All that will happen now will be a mad scramble by people to get their hands on the court records to see what the allegation was about.

  • her own family scuttled her campaign

  • “Dana – unidentified allegations from unknown source & threat by unnamed reported to publish same in unnamed paper. Glad that’s cleared up”
All from Brian Dobson via twitter.

  • Dana: “These are shocking, terroble allegations so they are”.

    Us: “What are they exactly?”

Dana: “They’re just terrible, vile, malicious things altogether.”

    Us: “Such as?”

Dana: “Oh, now that’d be telling ye. I simply couldn’t repeat them here.”

    Us: “Huh?”

  • Dana and I reserve respect for the woman as a person, is deluded. Like her agenda which is religious fluff, her campaign is like a case of moving statues. She promises to protect the Irish Constitution for no other reason than to protect the protocols imposed by previous governments which protect child molesters and deny women the comfort of abortion on their own doorstep. I for one do not understand her campaign let alone support it; I wish she would find some other outlet for her right wing suit myself when its suits me style of candidature. She’s an hysterical fanatic hiding behind this Clockwork Orange / Nun persona which I doubt anyone in their right mind would vote to represent us on an international stage.

    • Well said Elizabeth. But I wish you were right about nobody voting for her. While she wont be elected president, she was elected MEP for Connaught/Ulster by people who should have known better. But as someone who is more than well known for a rant or two on religion, nothing will surprise me when it comes to this. People who I have complete respect for in every other regard will do the daftest things when it comes to protecting their myths. Our wee Dana is just another example in a long line.

    • @Cyril I completely agree about the fact that she does have a support base which can only be understood in the context of that particular platform. It is an anti-European / pro “I remember Ireland long ago”. I genuinely worry that there will be wider support for her cloak and dagger beliefs than we think.

    • Well said Elizabeth, Dana is a religious nut.

    • How anyone could describe abortion as "a comfort" is beyond me.

    • @ Charles if you ever known a woman who has had to travel to abort a child it doubles the trauma. Comfort describes the comfort of having abortion on your doorstep.

  • if the allegations are of a sexual nature I am sure David Norris can write a letter on her behalf.

    • Leon to be fair to David Norris he has humanity. You can pretty much say whatever you feel about him but he has time for people in an honest way. He even felt sorry for Dana. As you may have noticed Micheal D Higgins and Sean Gallagher also had some sort of sympathy for her in the Prime Time interview last night. The body language was interesting. Personally I’d rather vote for someone with humanity – they always get my respect.

  • Dana !!! You’re in Cuckoo Land !!!! Odds on favorite to come last !!! I think !!

Conniving in the extreme..especially her deliverence of it right at the end of the debate…sick to death of you Dana love…your simpering all kinds of everything manner, and your notions.

  • I have never seen such a brave bunch of people as on this page, Saying negative things (Or truths) about Dana….
Do ye not know she’ll come after ye with her legal team (I think they’re the old A-Team) and hunt you down,
Your now allowed saying anything negative or even impartial about/towards Dana, Are ye all crazy…
If I were ye I’d run, run for the hills with arms flailing wildly, Run Simba and never come back…..

  • Lest we forget:
The role of an Irish president is to cut ribbons at grand openings.

  • She is not standing up for the Irish Constitution for the Irish people. She is standing for Catholics who wish to protect the protocols which have a stranglehold on it.

  • At least I now know the rumour. At last

  • Imagine if this was the Government, we would be in for some meaningful scandal. Dana et al will al be forgotten about once this election is over, given their limited input to national policy, and maybe this is no bad thing.

  • Her interview with TV3;

    http://tv3.ie/3player/show/2/41157/1/News-Updates

    She’s not backing out.

  • I think its an absolute disgrace that third parties are going after Dana and oither candidates in this Presidential race … FYI, ionly 2 candidates have not been targetted like this to date … FG Mitchell and Labour Higgins …
Work it out for yourself people …. and guess which 2 candidates have the full power of RTE and the Indo behind them, along with the Government ….
I know i will get comments back going on about conspiracy theories etc, but i predicted all these tactics right from the start of the election….. Do not let the establishment win this election … vote for ANYONE other than FF/FG/Labour

    • So NOBODY else could be pursuing an agenda other than "the establishment"? fwiw I consider the indo to be a rag but I don’t think theres an agenda being pursued by the political parties more a mix of other agendas and an effort to sell papers

    • @Keith ….. I could list a whole host of issues that the Papers and TV stations could go after in relation to both of these candidates ….
      1) Micthells cousin, from what i understand on the web, and from people from Dublin that i know, is a senior member of the underworld …. drug-dealing , hit-man etc…. And Mitchell isnt exactly disclosing it in public to let them know it, if you know what i mean… why do you thiunk this hasnt been raised by the media? Plenty of juicy storied there ???
      2) Higgins, taking 3 pensions up until recently, dropped one of them, just in time for his nomination to the Presdiential election campaign … he was also a known IRA supporter in the 1970’s …

I could go on … i have an entire laundry list …. but, very conveniently, the papers, and the TV stations etc are very quiet on these matters ….

    • At Cal. If you want a story that could blow Mitchell clean out of the water look at his voting and actions re. the Galvin Report in Europe, which investigated corruption and abuse of MEP expenses in Europe.

On a tamer note, ask why does he refuse to publish his own expenses from Europe, it is tax payers money. All above board of course but the public has the right to see how he spends their money.

Bertie doesn’t even have the brass neck to do what Mitchell is doing.

    @ Elizabeth…..yeah,soooooo well said!!!!
