Fine Gael criticises referendum parody ads as ‘desperate last minute tactics’

The ads, which link to the Fine Gael website, are the work of the UK political blogger Guido Fawkes who said they were “good craic”.

FINE GAEL HAS criticised a number of ads which have linked to their official website and parody their campaign for a Yes vote by suggesting it would benefit bankers at some of the world’s biggest banks.

Ads featuring Barclay’s chief executive Bob Diamond, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and other senior figures from Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas have been appearing on some Irish news websites today and link to the Fine Gael website.

The ads are the work of the political blogger Paul Staines, an Irish citizen, who runs the Guido Fawkes British political blog and wrote on Monday that he was looking to place the ads in the Irish Times.

As David Cochrane of Politics.ie noted, some of the ads also link to the website of Declan Ganley’s Libertas but TheJournal.ie understands that the ads are not in anyway affiliated to the organisation which is campaigning for a No vote.

A Fine Gael spokesperson described the ads as a ”desperate last minute tactics by people on the No side” adding that the party had contacted the companies mentioned in the ads and raised the issue with Google Ads.

“They’re a clear breach of the term and conditions because they’re using their logos,” the spokesperson added.

Asked for a comment, Staines told TheJournal.ie via email this afternoon: “Good craic. Truth in advertising,” adding: “Vote NO”.

  • ‘Desperate tactics’ like having to manufacture a blackmail clause and stick it into the treaty at the last minute because its the only way you could possibly secure a ‘yes’ vote?

    • Interestingly this is the same guy who came up with that dodgy list of supposed Anglo bondholders. If I wondered did he have an agenda before I’m pretty sure now.
Sorry but when people from outside Ireland get involved in calling for a vote one way or the other isn’t ‘interfering’ and ‘bullying’. Ah sorry my mistake that’s only when people look for a Yes.

    • on an unrelated topic, people who vote yes cannot understand the treaty, or maybe they would like to be ruled (yes i meant RULED) by anonymous and unaccountable bankers

    • Speak for yourself peasant, I read all literature provided by both sides and despite not bring a lawyer read the treaty text itself. After careful thought I voted yes as I believed it was in Irelands best interests overall. So, please explain how a yes voter can be ill informed.
Before anyone says it I am sure no voters did likewise but came to a different outcome but that is the joy of a democracy

Ireland is one of the few EU countries having a say by referendum.
Germany won’t….Frau M is in favour… but not so the German people.
France voted a president that would welcome changes but is not allowed to say so in order not to destabilise the EU further.
No matter what the Euro is destabilizing……If you want a stable EU…. get rid of this parasitic fiscal unity and its worthless coinage….Rats have the intelligence to leave a sinking ship…. Politicians like to tie themselves and us to the mast.

    • Ed. Hang on a mo there, usual dishonest rubbish from the no side. Germany does not allow binding referenda for very obvious reasons. Think 1933 when some rabble rouser’s convinced the German population who were at a low point they had been hard done by. That they should vote in a tough new leader and give him executive power.
I know you won’t find this hard to believe but where there a lot of uncertainty some people use it to their advantage, to push their agenda.

    • Gary I think if you do a little bit of research the guy you are talking about (Hitler) wasn’t elected by referendum so please clarify what you mean. Oddly enough if I remember correctly Hitler didn’t even win the election that bought him to power. But sure keep on with the those who advocate no are dishonest

ASK YOURSELF THIS: ARE FRANCE AND GERMANY MORE CONCERNED FOR IRISH ECONOMIC ‘STABILITY’ THAT FACILITATES GREATER WEALTH IN IRELAND OR THAT POSITIVELY IMPACTS THEIR OWN ABILITIES TO GROW?!

STABILITY IN IRELAND MEANS WE PLOD ALONG SUBSISTING ON THE SCRAPS – THIS IS FINE FOR EUROPE BECAUSE THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS WON’T WORRY THAT WE WILL EVER GO BANKRUPT AND SO WE WILL NEVER AGAIN IMPACT THE SOLVENCY OF THE EUROZONE. THE DOWNSIDE FOR LITTLE EIRE IS THAT WE WILL BE BOUND AND INFLEXIBLE – TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT GROWTH AND WEALTH IS INHIBITED PERMANENTLY.

ICELAND HAS THE SOLUTION FOR IRELAND. DON’T SELL YOUR SOUL FOR ‘STABILITY’!

WE NEED GROWTH TO ESCAPE THE ECONOMIC TRAP WHICH HAS BEEN SET AND AGREED TO BY CRETIN Hdip HOLDERS LIKE ENDA KENNY. THIS TREATY PAVES THE WAY FOR THE GERMANS TO TAKE AWAY ANY REASON FOR INVESTORS TO COME TO IRELAND – THINK CORPORATION TAX RATE!

IF NOT FOR YOURSELF, DO IT FOR THE REST OF US AND OUR CHILDREN!

DONT BE A LEMMING, VOTE NO!

Vote no so we can see the cards before we make our play. That’s it. Good luck to us – ádh linn.

    • Ann the only reason anyone would “research their opponent” as you so combatively put it, is so they can engage in an ad hominem attack on them. You cannot engage on points alone so start attacking people personally. It is the last reserve of the dying wasp. Always has been.

I personally never bother to look at people’s pages. I dare say should I look at yours I would see you are a militant anti-gov, anti-everything, semi anarchist, possibly with ties to some political/ community organisations opposing the Treaty. Tell me if that were true would it negate your opinions? It would certainly negate your objectivity and your ability to critically engage. In my humble opinion.,

And Ann what does it matter who I have worked with at any point? I can still formulate an independent opinion. Mores the point what does it matter how I came to be in DC? I do happen to think it was invaluable. I am sure there are many things you think valuable that I would find petty at best, poisonous at worst.

There is certainly no reason why you should start copying and pasting facts relating to me on a public forum, which even by the low standards I have seen on here, is really desperate, and probably defaming.

It is all the more galling when you had the audacity to call me up on “going off topic” yesterday. “Going off topic” Ann is going out of your way to dredge up information on your so called “opponents” to than publish on a public forum. All it does is serve to underscore your total inability to engage and win a debate based on the merit and accuracy of your position, or the power of your persuasion, and highlight the depths you, and it seems alot of NO siders, will sink to.

  • Really clutching at straws now. It is getting laughable. Thought their little High Court stunt would work. It hasn’t. And now this? If there was ever a valid argument for voting NO these underhanded tactics and gross misrepresentations have truly undermined it.

I hope the organisations implicated take them to court for misrepresentation.

They’re not asking who will win anymore, but by how much yest will win by, with the 8% to 16% bracket the current favourite. I’d be surprised if it was that high but not surprised at all by yes victory.

That’s my point. I was commenting on the post above mine! Nobody can call it, that’s why I said how can you be certain that it will be yes. Or no for that matter. I havnt spoken to any undecided yet, either yes or no and both firmly adamant as to why there voting each way. I really can’t see how anyone would vote yes or still be undecided but that’s just me being overly involved since the beginning.
