11 pictures that prove the election trail is an odd place

Scaring elderly ladies and eating soup – all in a day’s work for a European Parliament hopeful…

HERE AT THEJOURNAL.IE‘s political desk we’ve noticed a surge in photos from politicians on the campaign trail in recent weeks with an election just over a month away.

As well as the usual slew of TDs, Senators, Councillors, MEPs and people hoping to be all or some of the above posting perfunctory tweets that usually begin with “great to meet…”, “delighted to meet…”, “great canvass with…” there are also pictures of candidates doing some slightly odd things, particularly those going for the European Parliament.

We’ve picked out a handful to show you how, frankly, it’s gotten out of hand. Not that it’s likely to stop.

In fact it will only get worse…

1. These ladies look a bit frightened to be photographed with Fine Gael’s Deirdre Clune:

2. What’s Sinn Féin’s Matt Carthy (far left) looking at?

3. Fine Gael’s Seán Kelly loves a “bit of craic” with street performers:

4. What sweet nothings is Barry Cowen (centre) whispering in Fianna Fáil colleague Thomas Byrne’s (right) ear?

5. Fine Gael’s Simon Harris is really rocking those elbow patches:

6. And he’s really lecturing these poor women:

7. Hasn’t independent Luke Ming Flanagan heard of the humble bottle of water?

8. Just what is going on here with Labour’s Lorraine Higgins?

9. Is this an attempt at photobombing by People Before Profit’s Brid Smith?

10. Why is Fianna Fáil’s Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher looking so angry?

11. And do we really need to see someone eating soup?
