Driver praised after children escape injury when tree hits bus

The incident occurred in Donegal yesterday.

11 CHILDREN ESCAPED injury thanks to a quick-thinking bus driver when a tree hit the mini-bus they were travelling in.

The incident occurred at Lisnennan in Letterkenny yesterday morning. The Donegal Democrat said that the driver saw the tree falling and managed to slow down, meaning that the front of the bus was hit. No children were reported to have been injured.

Local Fine Gael councillor, Jimmy Kavanagh said: “What happened apparently was 11 kids were on the bus, a mini bus, and I think that the driver saw it happening and he was able to slow down and take it on the front of the bus. None of the kids were injured. They were shook up obviously but none were injured.”

“I don’t know who the driver was but he deserves a lot of credit,” said Cllr Kavanagh. He said that the weather in Donegal had been very stormy yesterday and overnight, leading to some people staying in their homes.

“It is one of those things that would really make you think because it could have been so serious, that number of kids going to school. Thank God everything was OK.”
