I was shocked by this when I moved to Dublin, 2-3 cars going through a red. I’m also regularly cut off, when going straight, by a car turning right across me (flooring it on a green light).

It was madness runing red line through busy traffic streets when it could have been raised to run above the streets and traffic making it faster and safer.

A flying LUAS?!

A lot of cities have raised rail links to avoid streets and traffic.
There is sections of the green line raised crossing the canal and roads below.

The green line was built on the old Harcourt st railway line. Hence why it is mostly off street, whereas the red line was built completely from scratch. In reality what dublin needs is an underground, the best and most efficient form of public transport. We must be one of the few capitals in the western world without one! London has one for 100+ years. It would be worth the investment.

Easy resolution to all these problems with cars would be to get the lights to turn red 5-10 seconds in advance of what they are now!! Cars always run the lights from yellow to red, with a few muppets running it on the red…get them waiting longer so the Luas can pass safely! Are there any crazies out there that run a light 10 seconds after it has turned red?? (who am I kidding…i’m sure some do!)

All I know is in Prague I have seen accidents with trams but the system there is no matter what happens its the car owner thats liable & the accident is cleared immediately & the car owner incurs the full cost so accidents are not that frequent. A friend hit one about 12 years ago & it cost a fortune.

Stupid to hold the car owner liable no matter what. Drunk tram driver runs his light, derails the tram and hits a parked car – car owner liable.

How often is it the tram drivers fault anyway? Professional drivers will always get the benefit of a doubt over any amateur drivers.

Professional drivers? What criteria have to be met to be called a professional driver? There are taxi drivers with PSV licences, who have criminal convictions and drive banged up wrecks that call themself that.

Criteria would be people who are paid to drive.

The assumption is they are better drivers as its their job.

It works this way in many countries.

On a Prime Time investigates episode last year, a Dublin bus driver was followed who was doing 9 hour shifts with Dublin Bus. He then went straight from his bus shift to driving a taxi for 12 hours and back to his next shift at Dublin bus. By your criteria in an accident, give him the benefit of the doubt in any accident caused because he’s paid to drive.

Sounds like a sensible idea but this is Ireland!!!

Trams cant turn to avoid anything on the tracks and don’t stop very fast.
As it crosses nearly every road running between north and south of the city as well as travelling down narrow streets with traffic the volume of cars is very high. a car not clearing a junction because of heavy traffic although it is stopped the tram can’t always stop in time and justs clip it. Bit like if you watch any junction with a yellow box in it there will always be a car in it at some stage when they shouldn’t.

The junkies aren’t up yet !!!

They said on 98fm that it was cleared. I could be wrong. Website says no delays.

The fault lies with the other drivers. If everyone drove properly they wouldn’t hit a LUAS.

How many accidents are happening nowadays? The standard of driving has been shocking lately. People need to cop on.

The answer is even simpler. Revoke the license of all drivers who hit the Luas. It would take mighty poor driving to collide with them.

The simple fact is if people drove properly they wouldn’t hit the trams.

It’s a great service for getting junkies into town free of charge to shop lift.

I have to disagree with u on that, especially the green line. That followed an old railway line and keeps it away from traffic and makes it very quick to get to the city. 22min from Central Park stop to Harcourt St stop, there is no way a bus would do that journey in anything close to that time. A dedicated bus route just would not be as quick as it would get constantly stopped at lights and other delays.

@Jason, I mean that they could have simply tarmacked the same luas route rather than put tracks on it. Everything the same as the Luas except the actual vehicles would be on tyres not tracks.

True, 800 million spent on having a tram system. In reality if you had a dedicated road and a double buses running the length of it, you’d have the same thing.

Arbitrasure, then ud get taxis wanting to use it and then cyclists and then cars would sneak onto it too and make it just as bad as any other route into the city.

Luas is brilliant. It takes me 45 mins which would otherwise take me an hr and a half in morning traffic. Its a brilliant service.
