M6 limited to one lane eastbound between Athenry and Oranmore

An accident involving a boat meant a road closure for some time, and travellers are advised to expect delays.

MOTORISTS HEADING towards Dublin from the Galway region this evening are advised that travel may be delayed due to an accident on the M6 between the Athenry and Oranmore junctions.

Gardaí earlier advised that the road was closed entirely for eastbound traffic due to a serious traffic collision, though it now appears that the road has re-opened, albeit only in one lane.

As this photo – submitted by a reader – shows, the accident appears to have involved a boat becoming detached from a vehicle and colliding with a wall.

AA Roadwatch has confirmed that the road has reopened. Drivers have been asked to take alternative routes if possible.
