Dublin

You'll be seeing billboards and bus ads about the State of Palestine from today

TDs from four main parties have supported the action.

A CAMPAIGN BEING launched today aims to push for immediate recognition of the State of Palestine by the Irish government.

The action has been initiated by the Sadaka, the Ireland-Palestine Alliance, and will focus on the use of public advertisements around Dublin to encourage the recognition of the State of Palestine.

An event today will be attended by Senators and TDs from the four main political parties, including Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell, Labour TD Joe Costello, Fianna Fáil leader Michaeál Martin and Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams.

Attending the launch will also be the Palestinian Ambassador, Ahmed Abdelrazek, President of the ICTU, John Douglas and chair of Sadaka, Marie Crawley.

Aim of the campaign

The campaign will use billboards located at Donnybrook Bus Depot, Stillorgan Road, East Wall Road and Landsdowne Road as well as transvision screens located at Heuston, Connolly, Pearse Station and Busaras.

Advertisements on the sides of buses will also be used.

Current status

Palestine currently is not recognised as a state by the Irish government.

In October last year, 31 of the upper houses’ Senators voted in favour of recognising Palestine as an independent State.

A similar motion put forward by Sinn Féin passed through the Dáil in December with Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan saying at the time that he would “advance matters further”.

There are currently 135 members of the United Nations that recognise the State of Palestine, with Sweden becoming the most recent country to do so in November last year.
