@Liam mc carthy: agreed….im in my 50s not generally into social media but still enough information on line to form an opinion on who I want to vote for…. I do understand older people probably don’t use social media as much but if they are like my parents in their 70s they vote for the same part and family all the time so really don’t see any need for junk mail leaflets
IM 86 Got a card last week from Local young Independent here in killarney saying ” sorry I missed you” and this morning he called again,I will definitely vote for him.He is the first politician whom I have spoken to in the 12 years I have lived in this 10 house ” cul- de- sac” ,well done MartinO’ Grady.
If you’re depending only on an election leaflet, written by the candidate (or their supporter) then you’re not really understanding what they stand for. Their words and actions tell you more then an election leaflet ever will.
And there’s a LOT more information provided about what a candidate WON’T say then what they will.
A certain Independent candidate that ran in Meath East and is now in the Seanad, was clearly not someone I’d ever vote for based on all the issues they refused to ever comment on. Though they’ve since shown their true colours in the Seanad.
@Tricia G28: Yes. There should be easier resources for quickly finding out what views a candidate has or is unwilling to state.
University of Limerick started a site some years ago called Whichcandidate with the intent of providing a set of questions to each candidate running in whichever constituency. Idea being you could easily see what they answer, or not answer and find ones that ‘match’ with the ones you put a priority on.
Does not sound like too difficult of an undertaking, but the site is pretty broken for me. I can’t even seem to change location without messing around with the url, when do that keep finding constituencies with no data for any candidate, and haven’t found me own yet.
Also, I’m still baffled as to why we kept the Seanad.
@ben wu: we kept the Seanad so that fine gael could run ruinous, unethical people like Doherty for the EU despite the fact she actually campaigned to get rid of that retirement home for failed ministers
100% count as junk mail (or free newspaper/newsletter) as the sign on our letter box says. My position is this: if the candidate or their canvassers cannot follow simple directions where I,have clearly stated I don’t want their flyer, they are not fit for office and will not be getting my vote.
@Finn Barr: careful finn barr did ya not know we are not allowed to criticise terrorist organisations in Ireland anymore…. the Americans started a war with a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.. but in good old politically correct Ireland ya can’t say a bad word about palastinens of hamas …apparently its ok to harbour hamas a terrorist organisations in your borders
Comparing the sizes of the two protests in Dublin yesterday, I think it’s safe to say the ‘politically correct’ crowd are a tiny minority that don’t represent the ordinary Irish person.
Did you see the cut of them?
@Finn Barr: mostly a very troubled lot who would show up to the opening of an envelope, its hysteria really. they actually believe it was all really a fash protest, despite thousands turning out to call for an election, shout about appalling healthcare and other issues
Make a sign:
” PLEASE PUT YOUR ELECTION LITERATURE IN THE GREEN BIN TO THE LEFT/RIGHT OF THE DOOR. IT WILL SAVE US HAVING TO DO IT.”
That should help them and us.
Any that come through the post with householder at my house . I put them back in a post box with “Not known at this address” return to sender note.
Any others dropped through the letter box by Young teenagers I hand into the local litter warden as un welcome litter. Only post addressed to the
Owner no junk mail is clearly signed on my letter box.
The only canvasser who was polite enough to visit my area was not belonging to any of the main parties …..
I am a postman and unfortunately they aren’t classed as junk mail as they are addressed to the household. The junk mail promoting stuff don’t come with an address on them, so we don’t deliver to households who have no junk mail stickers on their letterboxes.
Posters are a waste of money and tell you nothing about the candidates policies. They are extremely costly and most are eventually paid for by the taxpayers under refund of expenses provisions. That is why you so many at election time.
I’m totally blind and at no point have I been offered any of this junk in an accessible format. I had a person at my door and after telling them I’m totally blind I was offered a leaflet.
@James T.Kirk: exactly, its not like this nonsense concept of ‘unsolicited’ that used for everything (the actual proper one to do with harassment I obviously recognise) it should fall under the category of spam. Its eyesore trash too
The irony of green party candidates going along with election literature and those eyesore posters. Th fact the people of Ireland must see Regina doherty’s sneering, phoney face for a few weeks amounts to something that wouldn’t feel out of place in Guantanemo.. what achievement is she more proud of, the mass PSC card data leak she never really apologised for or the fact she awarded contracts to UK companies for the unemployed, one of whom had intimidated and abused so many people it’s not even funny and even some committed suicide from what they did to abuse them
They arent considered junk mail . Look hard know who believe but government thats in at to making right old mess. Was over in mullingar hospital with dad yesterday nearly cried way irish people left on trolleys and chairs for hours on end. Dad sitting on chair over10 hours. Even people from Ukraine s and polish people i know go back to own country ad hospital s are better.
No they don’t count as junk mail. I have taken part in canvassing and I generally do put leaflets into “no junk mail” boxes. When challenged, I always say “political!” but if the householder insisted on my taking them back, I always would.
