Wardrobe Malfunction

We asked Marty Whelan to explain this photo

What in the world is going on here?

MANY MOONS AGO, the following photo was published in the RTÉ Guide…

It resurfaces every couple of years online, prompting responses like the following (from this Broadsheet post):

“He uses it to open the Winning Streak envelopes.”

Anyway, Marty Whelan dropped by TheJournal.ie for a chat in the last few days.

We emailed around the office for questions in advance – and (wouldn’t you know it) the first five responses mentioned THAT photo.

“Can he finally put the ‘unfortunate trouser crease or something more’ debate to rest?” a colleague asked.

So ask we did.

He didn’t mind at all (at all).

If you’re not in a position to watch the video right now, check back later, but you might like to note it contains the following quotes:

  • “I don’t need to look at it, the picture’s big enough from here.”
  • “It appeared in the RTÉ Guide – a fine publication and indeed as you know the official organ of RTÉ.”
  • “It’s done me no harm. And it’s done a lot for cotton suits as we know them.”
