DAVID NORRIS HAS said that he will not bring a spouse into Áras an Uachtaráin if elected President of Ireland.

In an interview with TodayFM’s Last Word programme this evening, the independent presidential candidate, who is gay, said that he was not currently in a relationship with anyone.

He added that if he were elected there would not be any spouse joining him in the Phoenix Park.

I’m not in a civil partnership, there is no spouse, there will not be a spouse in Áras an Uachtaráin.

In a wide-ranging interview with host Matt Cooper he also addressed a frontpage editorial in today’s Irish Daily Star which carries the headline: “Norris A Pain In The Aras”.

The editorial criticises the independent senator’s refusal to publish all the letters appealing for clemency that he wrote on behalf of his former partner Ezra Nawi who was convicted of the statutory rape of a 15-year-old boy in 1995.

The senator said it was up to the paper to “decide if it was tasteful or not,” adding:

I’m not going to attack any newspaper, the public will judge their standards. I am not going to attack any journalist, I never have and I never will.

  • damned if he does;damned if he doesn’t.

  • It is a peculiarly salacious question to put to any candidate an almost certainly not one you could ask at a job interview. It has the same legitimacy as asking candidates if they have any plans to divorce while holding the Office. If Norris is to be asked intrusive questions about his personal life merely because he is gay, will the media do a trawl through the past and current intimate lives of other candidates?

    • I am more interested in the six other letters. My question is:
David Norris said that these letters are much of what was in the first one, which was published but how come there was no legal advice about that one and there is about the other ones? Surely that says that they are not the same. Also why did David Norris think it was a bad idea that Nawi pleaded guilty as has been alleged

  • He said he didn’t have a partner and that’s why he wouldn’t have a partner in the Aras – he also said, who knows in the future or something along those lines. All he meant by this was that he wasn’t civilly partnered or in a relationship now.

  • Bit of a pointless question for him to be asked by today fm if you ask me, Matt cooper obviously scraping the barrel for questions!

  • Will this be a first? No spouse in the house!

  • He may be single at the moment but does this mean he’s going to take a vow of celibacy for the next seven years?

  • Norris’s role in decriminalizing homosexuality is the only major thing that he has going for him, but so much for Norris doing anything to help gay rights today. Is he inferring that somehow gay relationships are unacceptable to the people? It appears that that every time Norris opens his mouth these days, he puts his foot in it.

    • No he was asked this on the late late show months ago when he originally annoucned he was entering the race. Tubirty gave the inference that people would be shocked if he was to have a patner. How disgraceful is that if he is elected and wants a partner he can have one.

    • Frankly Keith, considering your track record on politics.ie, if the headline was “Norris says he will have a spouse in the Áras if elected”, you’d object to that too.

      P.

    • Eh no Mr Mills, all he is saying is that he is currently single and therefore will not be moving some random boyfriend into the Park! It is you and the media that are suggesting that it is something more!

    • How exactly did he ‘infer’ that, Keith? He gave an unambiguous answer to what appears to be a fairly asinine question.

As for your lofty pronouncement that his decriminalisation work is ‘the only major thing he has going for him’ – always the bloody contrarian, eh?

  • Mr Norris will say anything if he thinks it will get him a few votes. He’s trying to be all things to all people, he has actually started to talk to people on Parnell Street , never even made eye contact before the nomination.

    • Care to elaborate at all? In exactly what way is he trying to be all things to all people? He’s an openly homosexual senator in a country with a rather nasty social history of homophobia. So in what way, as you so confidently claim, does this man attempt to win broad appeal? He talks to people on Moore street?? Well no shit. They all do. Welcome to Irish politics. Nice of you to join us.

    • Simon, I never mentioned his sexuality I don’t see that as an issue at all, Its his arrogance I dislike.
Btw you have no need to welcome me to Irish Politics I am very aware of what’s happening, even in Moore St. Take care.

    • And you know that because you trail him everywhere, at all times?

  • His key role in decriminalizing homosexuality is the highlight of his career, bur so much for helping the gay community now. What kind of message does this send? Does Norris think that gay relationships are unacceptable to the electorate? A dreadful let down for his remaining supports.

    • He is not belittling gay relationships, he is merely confirming that he is single and will not have a partner with him in Aras an Uachtaran. What is wrong with that??

    • hes saying hes not dating anyone and not in a civil partnership so therefore he is single and if elected would be in Aras an Uachtarain alone. im sure if he was to get hitched his partner would move in. im gay and take see no implied offence so please dont speak for the gay community

    • Face it Keith Norris is 69, and like many, maybe even most, single, divorced or widowed 69 year olds, Norris doesn’t plan on having a relationship. So, where do u get the idea that he doesnt think a gay relationship isnt good enough for the Aras?

    • No where did I read that he thinks it’s unacceptable that he have a spouse in the house. He was asked a question and answered. Stop reading so much into it.

    • It is quite obvious that he is belittling gay relationships. This question was the perfect opportunity to say”While I’m single right now, if I did have a partner, they would certainly be coming to the Aras with me and who know, if I do meet someone, we have civil partnerships and they would obviously live with me”. As Theresa Daly says below, the answer he gave seem to be desperate attempt at damage limitation or trying to create a headline that didn’t involve the infamous letter scandal.
