Off-duty garda shot in attempted mugging in New Orleans

He’s now being treated for his wounds in hospital.

A GARDA HAS been shot while on holiday with his family in New Orleans.

Garda Brian Hanrahan – who is based in Newcastle West in Limerick – is believed to have been shot in the lower back and leg after refusing to hand over cash in an attempted mugging.

Hanrahan was taken to hospital but his condition is not yet known. It’s understood that he’s in the intensive care unit.

The Department of Foreign Affairs told TheJournal.ie that it is aware of the case and providing consular assistance.

The shooting is believed to happened at around 5.40 am local time yesterday at the intersection of New Orleans Street and North Tonti Street in the city.
