FÁILTE IRELAND HAS released its list of the country’s top tourist attractions, ranked by the number of visitors each attracted.
The figures show just two sites in Ireland reaching the million-visitor mark during 2011. But still, we guess that is the equivalent of almost one in four people in the country.
So what made the cut? Fáilte Ireland breaks its figures down into paid and free attractions – here are the top ten for each, in pictures:

How on earth can the Acquatic centre be on the list, does that cover every person that goes in for a weekly swim?? Seems like a dubious tourist attraction to me!
Amazed that Glendalough is not there as it’s busy all year round.
Also if Acquatiic Centre makes the list then how come the likes of Croke Park, Lansdowne Road and Point Depot aren’t?
We need a theme park with serious Rollercoaster..
It just proves that paid attractions garner greater interest than free attractions. We have an amazing plethora of free attractions here in Ireland but they are taken for granted and now with the way things are, are underfunded. Something has to give. Cherish them while they are still free.
I wonder how long it will take the government to start charging for the other free attractions. The cliffs of Moher were free and they didn’t cost much to build.
What about the magic road? And spider baby? Shame how tourists don’t get to see the real Ireland at all.
Holy Cross abbey is a great place to visit as are all the other places,is this the only photo of it ? .
This summer as I can not afford a ”holiday” I am making it my mission to visit a lot of tourist sites in Dublin area , I will be a tourist in my own city. Roll on the school holidays.
Good idea Susie. Loads of touristy nooks and crannies in Dublin and you pay little or nothing. I am from Limerick but did a short stint in Dublin lately. I took two weeks off at the end just to enjoy these things. We’re dead in a few years. Well worth it. Amazing how many Irish pay no attention to our own jewels and love to tell you all about overrated places they’ve travelled to abroad.
Susie, I bought the Lonely Olanet guide to Dublin. Well worth a purchase. St Michans church, St audeons, kilmainham gaol then walk thru the Royal hospital, Collins barracks then Arbour hill cemetary,Stoneybatter, phoenix park, glasnevin cemetary, galleries at the tip of parnell square,natural history museum, art gallery, merrion square….
There is the ruins of an old 13th Cntury church on the Dublin Rd to Sutton at Bayside. Kilbarrack Church. It’s quite a nice little site. Eoin MacNeil and his brother are buried there, as is Francis Higgins who once own the Freemans Journal and is more famously known for squealing on Silken Thomas. There is also a war memorial there.
Trinity College surely is visited by almost every visitor to Dublin?
It’s very hard to gauge visitor numbers there. Most people just walk around the grounds and so don’t get counted whereas those who see the Long Hall/Book of Kells or do the guided tour are counted. It’s also interesting to note that the Science Gallery is in Trinity College which comes high on the free list.
Around 400,000 more visitors for Guinness Storehouse than the National Gallery. Find that very strange
For those who don’t want to pay money for the Lonely Planet, you could check out http://www.revealireland.ie/ It’s relatively new and unkown but visually attractive and easy-to-use.
Jayziz. The Guinness ‘effin’ Storehouse!! Y’know what it is? They bus you in, they EXPLAIN everything to you, they give you a drink. They give you a view. So riddle me this–back in the day before the aluminum cask, there were oak barrels. Coopers made them with great skill. Where did they fell all the trees for those millions of barrels? I’ve just got to know.
