The law is clear. Money can be extracted from a comapny only by wages and dividends. THis extraction form the Quinn comapnies does not come under either heading , so it is difficult to see how it could be dealt with tax wise. If this is part of a larger pattern as one of the Quinns admitted, it seems some organ of state should be investigating. That’s if we lived in a normal state with the ordinary rule of law.

It’s not the government, or the banks, or Sean Quinn that cost us the money, it’s all three of them! Sean Quinn has created jobs…well so has every business person in Ireland who has employees on their books! The government are no better, with triple pensions etc. Banks…don’t get me started! We need to press reset on this country, get politicians that are not just there to get expenses etc, and go after corruption, no matter who they are!

In relative terms, ‘ordinary people’ were paying silly amounts of borrowed money for wedding trappings, house furnishings, cars, gardens etc. Some of us looked on with open mouths because we refused or were unable to play that game. We wondered were we living in the real world. It seems clear now that we were and they weren’t. Fair enough if it wasn’t for the fact that we were priced out of the market at the time and expected to foot the bill now.

I couldn’t imagine spending this amount of money on one small part of my wedding! That’s got crazy written all over it! I would feel sick at writing a cheque for this amount unless it was for a damn good cause!

The cost of it is irrelevant. It was their money at the time and they spent it how they liked, be it €10,000 or €100,000. Most comments here reflect typical Irish begrudery. Instead what I think is actually important is:

a) Was company law broken and if so have charges been brought against those who broke this law? If not, why not?
b) Is this the only instance of personal expenses being charged to Quinn companies or not?
c) Who paid for the cake, the Quinns or the taxpayer?

Unfortunately in the moral outrage over the cost of the cake, most of these more salient issues are missed.

I know a fantastic baker in my area who would have loved to make the cake for a lot less money and struggling in today’s market

It’s a law that for every big winner there needs to be a lot of losers. And big winners often lose in the end.
The rich and famous are a crap role model to follow and that is why western society is in the shite today. Until honest, decent values and a return to earning what you get by natural and sustainable means is the normal position, then there’s no hope for the future.
