Site of former Stardust premises put up for sale for €7 million

The family of victims say they are happy for the sale to proceed once plans for a memorial are followed through.

THE BUTTERLY BUSINESS Park has gone on sale for €7 million.

The land was the site of the Stardust nightclub, where a St Valentine’s Day fire in 1981 left 48 dead and 214 injured.

The families of those involved in the fire had initially opposed plans to redevelop the site but later withdrew their objections. Initial proposals looked to turn the site into a set of apartments and houses, as well as a hotel.

The site, previously owned by the Butterly family, was seized in 2012 by AIB after going into receivership.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Antoinette Keegan, whose two sisters Martina and Mary died in the fire, said:

Whatever happens to the site there are plans for the memorial, they should proceed with those. Not just a plaque. Something like what happened for the Twin Towers. It should be remembered that the victims perished there.

Keegan went on to specify that she thought an eternal flame would be an appropriate way to commemorate those killed in the fire.

The sale

The business park has gone on sale as a commercial property.

Currently, the development produces a gross rent of around €930,000 a year. The site is the location of a Lidl store which pays an annual rent of €330,000.

There is also a Maxol petrol station on the site that pays rent of €125,000 a year.

Of the income from the site, 75% comes from the retail tenants, whilst industrial tenants account for 14% and office tenants for 9%. The rest of the income comes from a telecommunications mast.

Butterly Business Park is located on the Beaumont Road opposite the Artane Shopping Centre.
