Suspicious package discovered in Angela Merkel's office
Incident follows earlier discovery of several mail bombs in Greece, and two explosions outside embassies in Athens.
GERMAN POLICE HAVE FOUND a suspicious package at Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office in Berlin which may contain explosives.
Officials told Reuters that no one was injured and their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Merkel was not in Germany when the package was discovered in the mailroom of her office.
The incident comes as Greek authorities report two mail bomb explosions outside the Swiss and Russian embassies in Athens. Several devices were delivered across the Greek capital today, including some addressed to the Greek parliament and foreign embassies.
On Monday, a package addressed to the Mexican embassy exploded at a postal delivery office, injuring one worker. Two suspects carrying a mail bomb addressed to the French president were arrested.
A Reuters photographer outside the Chancellery in Berlin this evening said police were restricting access to the building.
The AP reports that the building was not evacuated, and the package is being examined. Merkel’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert said the item bore “marks that indicated the possibility of explosives”.
