1. #STRESS Ninety-one of Europe’s most important banks are waiting for the results of stress tests, due to be released this afternoon. The publication of the test results by the European Banking Authority will reveal each bank’s exposure to risks and will indicate which banks are in trouble. Three Irish banks – AIB, Bank of Ireland, and Irish Life and Permanent – are covered by the stress tests.
2. #CLOYNE There is increasing pressure on former bishop John Magee to return to Ireland to face up to the findings of the Cloyne report. It’s believed that Magee may be in Rome. The One in Four group has said that both Magee and Monsignor Denis O’Callaghan should be facing criminal charges. Meanwhile the chairman of the Fine Gael parliamentary party Charlie Flanagan has called for the Papal Nuncio to be expelled from Ireland.
3. #HACKING Rupert Murdoch has said that ‘minor mistakes’ were made in the way News Corporation has handled the fallout from the hacking scandal. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal he’s said that some of the things that have been said in parliament in the UK have been ‘total lies’. He will appear before a parliamentary hearing next Tuesday after initially saying he couldn’t attend. The FBI has announced that it’s to launch and investigation into whether phones of the victims of 9/11 were hacked.
4. #APOLOGY The Guardian meanwhile, has apologised to The Sun for reporting that the tabloid had hacked into the medical records of former minister Gordon Brown. The Guardian has conceded that the information came from a different source. The Sun published details of Brown’s son being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and insisted that the source was the father of another child with the illness.
5. #TRANSGENDER Legislation providing for the recognition of transgender people in Ireland will be published later this year. The recommendations have been broadly welcomed by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. However a recommendation to exclude those in a marriage or civil partnership has been strongly criticised by the group. The Transgender Equality Network has also said that it has grave reservations concerning the criteria to be met in order to obtain gender recognition.
6. #TITANIC Italy’s finance minister has compared Europe to the Titanic, saying that like on the stricken vessel, “not even first-class passengers will be saved”. Giulio Tremonti was speaking of Europe’s need for a stronger regional plan in order to stamp out debt turmoil. Italy is facing a crunch vote on an austerity package today.
7. #ABORTION Senator and TCD Lecturer Ivana Bacik is calling for legislation for abortion in Ireland. Writing for TheJournal.ie she says that abortion is a reality in this country and that the real health needs of Irish women need to be met. 8. #IPHONE An iPhone user in Korea has been paid $946 in compensation after he complained that Apple had collected location data without his consent. The user’s law firm is now planning a class action suit against Apple. The company released a software update earlier this year in order to fix the problem of that allowed its devices to collect and store data.
9. #SQUIRREL! Want to own one of the most magical houses ever? A replica of the house from the Disney film ‘Up’ is for sale in Utah for $400,000. The home has been faithfully reproduced by a group of architects with the permission of Disney. It even features the hand-painted mailbox and the mural over the fireplace…
