Thousands of 'incidents and near misses' at two hospitals last year

Medical Independent sees documents recording accidents and other incidents at Tallaght and Cork University Hospital last year.

BOTH TALLAGHT and Cork University hospitals saw over 5,000 “incidents and near misses” happen on their premises in a 13-month period.

James Fogarty, reporting exclusively in the Medical Independent, writes that documents from the hospitals record 4,188 incidents at Tallaght between 1 January 2011 and 14 February this year. There were 1,217 incidents at CUH last year.

The CUH documents detail these incidents – many are “slips, trips and falls” but there are also 42 cases of people “absconding” from the hospital and 225 medication incidents.
