Two-year-old boy shot himself dead after finding his dad's gun in glove compartment

His grandfather said, “A great little kid was killed today.”

A 2-YEAR-OLD boy died in Florida yesterday afternoon after shooting himself in the chest with his dad’s gun.

The toddler, named as Kaleb Ahles, managed to get the gun out of the glove compartment when he was alone in the family car.

NBC News reports that the child’s parents, Kevin Ahles and Christina Nigro, were in the middle of moving from their home when their son found the .380-caliber handgun.

They heard a loud pop and ran to the car and performed CPR. Kaleb was then taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Pinellas County sheriff, Bob Gualtieri, told Florida Today: “Two-and-a-half year old Kaleb was able to get a gun, turn the gun to his chest, pull the trigger and shoot and kill himself.

“They took reasonable steps, and you can lawfully keep a gun in a vehicle in the glove box. It was secured in the glove box itself.”

The sheriff said at this point it does not appear that any charges will be filed.

“I don’t think anybody can punish these parents any more than what they’ve been punished.”

Press Association reports that the child’s grandfather - a retired Tampa police detective – who stood near the police tape outside the house said:

A great little kid was killed today. That’s all there is to say.
