Venezuelan authorities find ‘no evidence’ of Amazon tribe massacre

Authorities have been urged to continue their investigations, after reports that illegal gold miners massacred up to 80 members of an indigenous tribe by setting fire to a communal hut.

A TEAM OF Venezuelan officials who traveled to the Amazon to investigate a report of a mass killing in an indigenous community have found no evidence of any killings, government officials said.

Minister for Indigenous Peoples Nicia Maldonado said Saturday that the team traveled by helicopter to a remote jungle area where a Yanomami Indian group last week reported it had received word of a massacre of unknown proportions in July, with perhaps dozens slain by gold miners.

“No evidence of any death was found,” Maldonado told state television. She said officials hadn’t found any burned communal hut, which the indigenous group said had been reported by people who visited the community and talked with survivors.

‘I think there were killings’

Christina Haverkamp, an indigenous rights activist in Germany, said she thinks it’s possible the officials who traveled to the area simply didn’t find the community in question, and should keep investigating. Based on the account of the indigenous group, she said, “I think there were killings.”

“If they want to find the truth, they will only find the truth (working) together with the Yanomami,” Haverkamp said in a phone interview on Sunday from Hamburg.

Haverkamp has worked among the Yanomami for two decades in Venezuela and Brazil, and knows a little of their language. She said finding out what happened, or a possible death toll, is complicated in part because the Yanomami generally avoid talking about the dead and typically use “a lot” when describing numbers higher than three.

Luis Shatiwe, a leader of the Horonami Yanomami group, said last week that the account of killings had been relayed through villagers in nearby communities. He said that people from the village of Hokomawe reportedly had seen victims’ charred remains in the nearby community of Irotatheri and had talked with three survivors who had been hunting in the forest at the time of the violence. He said that account had later been relayed to others in the village of Momoi, and to others in the larger community of Parima.

‘They should interview survivors’

He said last week that it was unclear how many people were killed, but that villagers had sent word that about 80 people lived in Irotatheri and that they found only three survivors who had fled.

“They should find the survivors, and they should interview the survivors,” Haverkamp said of the officials who are carrying out the investigation.

National Guard Gen. Jose Eliecer Pinto Gutierrez told the Venezuelan newspaper Ultimas Noticias, in its Sunday edition, that he and other officials had visited four indigenous communities near the border with Brazil and “everything is fine there.” He said they had visited the communities of Momoi, Uchiche and Plantanal, though the newspaper report didn’t mention the community of Irotatheri.

The team that traveled to the jungle area was composed of military officers, prosecutors and other officials. A journalist from the government-supported television network Telesur went with them, and posted photos on Twitter of some of the people who were interviewed in Yanomami communities.

Pinto told Ultimas Noticias that they left a group of soldiers behind to patrol the area.

  • You’d wonder how motivated the government really are in finding out the truth.

  • Terrible, gold, oil, gas. The planet destroyed by greed and ignorance. Ignorance that is perpetuated by so called revealed religions. Nature is my god, reason my religion and the world is my country. To very loosely para phrase Thomas Paine.

In ten years or twenty when the gold is mined and the rats have moved on it will be made public about all these atrocities.

  • The Yanomami village of IROTATHERI and its inhabitants were shown well and intact on “Telesur” TV. Case closed. But now Stephen Corry of “Survival International” in London needs to explain to the international media about his assertions. As for the German “activist” Christina Haverkamp – she is now going to be on the “radar” in South America – of those observing “foreing NGOs” . See one list being watched by Brazil’s National Intelligence Service – CONVERSA AFIADA ABIN ONGS. Most are “indirectly” financed through “grants” by U.S. Congress and Germany’s Bundestag – to advance the project of extending “NATO protection” in South America… Everybody in South America knows by now – U.S., British, German and some other NATO NGOs are active in South America to destabilize the “independent” governments. Because Germans are less observed then “Gringos” – there are hundreds of German BND “auxiliaries” and agents active in South America – as NGO “activists”, Foundation Academics, Priests, “Journalists” .

  • Nicia Maldonado is, as many indigenous people, ashamed of being indio. She immitates the “civilized” criollo by being irresponsable and corrupt. I met her in Geneva. When I told her that I’m working for the indios to change the perception of their culture, by selling their product as fashion. She just laught at me and asked me if this is a good business. It’s strage that the yanomamis disapperead. The Chavez gouverment is saying something and doing the opposite.

    • Nicia Maldonado, one of Venezuela’s 535,000 indigenous citizens, is a highly respected international known advocate for indigenous rights : She does not “sell indigenous products as fashion” in Geneva/Switzerland as this “Gringa” in above comment. Nicia works tirelessly to represent indigenous people’s social and civic access to national development, and as citizens of their nation. She is what is known a “Macha” – is tough lady who has stood up to traditionalist chieftains who want to maintain their rule of indigenous commuities where women have to sumit to “traditional” subservience. She studied and earned several degrees in the field of education and law, which has prepared her to serve the interests of indigenous women much better then “selling indigenous products as fashion”: She wants indigenous women to study and aquire an education and skills – not spend a life sitting in a hammock in the family corner of a dark communal hut, between hacking in the casava fields and carrying buckets of water, and oblige her body to bear a child each year. The Director of Native American Health Service of the U.S. Bureau of Native American Affairs – is a Native American woman from South Dakota: She has a medical degree from Harvard, and ended her career as Professor of Medicine in Arizona – to direct the thousands of Native American physicians who are active in the Native American Health Service. Indigenous women in both Americas can no longer be kept in ethnological “petting zoos” for ambitious anthropologists or “sellers of indigenous products for fashion” in Geneva/Switzerland. • Associated Press is US Government propaganda, just like Reuters is British government propaganda and Agence France Presse is French government propaganda. What thejournal.ie should be doing is provide “a balance of propaganda” by also including news delivered from the news agencies/government propaganda of countries that are rivals to NATO such as ITAR-TASS from Russia, Xinhua from China and the Islamic Republic News Agency from Iran.

Naturally, the US government propaganda network, Associated Press, would rejoice in a story such as the one above about a possible massacre committed against the indigenous population under President Hugo Chavez’s watch. Hugo Chavez is a critic of NATO.

There is the AFP story that thejournal.ie also copies about a new bill making its way through the Indian parliament making gender harassment in the workplace a crime. This is a relatively positive news item. India is not a rival to NATO like China, Russia and Iran are. Gender harassment in the workplace is one of multitude of problems India faces however. A recent World Bank report states that over 40% of India’s 1.2 billion plus population suffers from malnutrition. A colossal abuse of human rights.

Over and above providing a “balance of propaganda”, thejournal.ie would do well to employ a staff member who actually takes an interest in foreign affairs and writes his/her own stuff.

I remind the staff of thejournal.ie that the Republic of Ireland is neutral. We are not aligned with NATO, the China/Russia bloc or the Global South.

    • Paul Carr expresses the sober view of neutral observers. Remember the “Gulf of Tonking Incident” 1964 – the fake report that Vietnam had attacked the U.S. Navy ? It started the Vietnam War with the U.S. Congress “Gulf of Tonking resolution”. Remember Gen. Colin Powell 2002 in the UN with Condoleeza Rice’s “atomic mushroom cloud” over the Near East ? It started the Iraq war. There is a GEOPOLITICAL WAR of the U.S. and NATO to destabilize the “independent” center-left goverment in South America: Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador. (They just destabilized the center-left goverment in Paraguay and they attempt to sabotage the normalization in Colombia). U.S. SOUTHCOM is responsible for military “parntership” (infiltration of military) and the U.S. 4th Fleet, reactivated in 2008 after de-activation in 1946 is operating at the coast of Venezuela. But the primary agents are those steering the hundreds of U.S., British, German – NGOs infiltrated in South America, which function together with the “international media” propagandists(BBC, Deutsche Welle, AFP, Reuters, AP, Fox, CNN, Univision, Telemundo). Brazil’s intelligence has been watching since decades the operation by the U.S. and Britain to force Brazil into creating an oversized reservation in Brazil on the border of Venezuela “Raposa Serra do Sol”. The leading ethnologist, Orlando Villas Boas warned in 2002 about the U.S.-British operation to force an “autonomous” indigenous entity under the protection of the UN. See youtube PROFECIA ORLANDO VILLAS BOAS. Also see the list of “foreign” NGOs bein watched by Brazil’s intelligence : CONVERSA AFIADA ABIN ONGS
