COMEDIAN VICTORIA WOOD has died aged 62, her agent has confirmed.

It follows a short battle with cancer.

Best known for her stand-up and sketch work, she also created, wrote and starred in the BBC sitcom Dinnerladies, which ran for two series between 1998 and 2000.

A much-loved figure in British showbusiness and an influence on generations of comedians, her humour was often based on observations of everyday life.

Wood interspersed her stand-up performances with her own comedy songs, and accompanied herself on the piano. She was also known for her frequent collaborations with actress Julie Walters, who co-starred in Dinnerladies and other productions.
