Its only a number plate! If you cant afford a new car, and an extra digit on the number plate is bothering you, you’ve little to be worrying about

Describing car shops as “The Motor Industry” is a bit like describing Penneys as being part of “The Clothing Industry”.

Ireland doesn’t make cars. It only sells them.

You could still guess which half of the year the car was bought under the old system, just by looking at how high or low the number was. So the new system is a bit silly really.

People will still want a car with the new year eg 2014, & whether its 141 or 142 won’t matter to anyone. Peak will still be in Jan. When looking to buy a second hand car, it wont make a blind bit of difference either, as if I was looking for a 2008 Ford Focus, I’d still enquire, or even know by looking at the number, if it was early or late. I don’t need this 1 or 2 to tell me

We had a simple, perfectly good system in place & the SIMI ruined it.

Continuation of displaying a car’s year on a reg plate beckons to one’s ego to make a luxury purchase. I don’t believe the proposed solution is the answer.

Get rid of vrt and make new cars cheaper,no more of these hair brained schemes,the motor trade will never see sales like the Celtic boomtime,these silly ideas wont make any difference

They have shot themselves in the foot. When they did this in the UK it led to a reduction in car sales because the current number, not being particularly clear on date, delivers no kudos on it’s half yearly change. This has resulted in both consumers and car hire companies delaying replacement decisions and holding onto their current vehicles longer.

Will the lord mayor then have to get 131 D 1 and 132 D 1?!

So how does bringing in a number plate that clearly identifies that you bought your new car in January or December help to improve car sales in December?

Do the SIMI think the Irish are brain dead?

They only people this may effect as those buying in April, May or June, they might hold on for the 132 coming in July. Those buying in October November December will still hold out for the 2014 reg.

I do see this having some affect. People in Ireland drive number plates. Some people wont even drive cars with number plates from a different county. The public is fickle & easy to manipulate.

More tripe. Why not just get rid of the year altogether. UK and Ireland, as far as I’m aware anyway, are the only two countries in the world with years in the reg.

I’d hate my car to seem old after 6 months, tops, and that’s if you buy in January or July. Otherwise it’s going to be “new” for even less than 6 months. Pointless.

They should have taken it one step further and gone 131 132 133 134 etc
Or left it along and have out free bottles of new car spray !!

I think the reasons for doing this set out by the SIMI seem a bit invalid to me. I think what’s expected from this is a lot of keeping up with the Jones’ type of thing. “Barry and Sue from across the street just bought a 131 reg car love” “not too worry, we’ll show them by getting a 132″

I would suggest personalised plates be allowed like they are in NZ. http://www.plates.co.nz shows the current available plates. (MEATH is available, DUBLIN is not). $869 each and VAT on every resale. Do the math Mr Varadkar.

People in Ireland are reg obsessed, I live in the UK and when I drive back to Dublin in my “yellow reg” they are more interested in thumping me than worrying about the year it was registered

Why can’t they just start at 1 and issue number plates that simply count up. Infinite supply, no need for letters and and silly year obsession?

The government in this country have been short sighted for years with regards to the motor trade(selling cars is not an industry). Sure they get a windfall tax but every time a new car is bought thousands of euro are sucked out of the Irish economy leading to unemployment and ultimately emigration

Love the way the new car sales graph takes into account the 20% or so of new fleet cars sold at the end of the tax year in sept/oct.
If we were going to the bother of changing it somebody competent should have been consulted as we could have changed to a decent system!

What a waste, even discussing it is an indication of the emptiness of most people’s minds. One serious question, who pays for all the software changes in licensing offices, insurance data bases, garda files, etc., etc., that will be needed, I don’t suppose its the garages….

They have a very similar system in Scotland. It seems to work fine.
I don’t think the idea is for extra sales, but to spread sales across the year.
I can’t believe the amount of comments on here that think this is complicated.

Nobody is forcing anyone to purchase a new car, but as an industry they have to try something new to help boost sales, I don’t see the issue with that, or would people rather that nothing new is ever tried?

It’s still space inefficient. What used to be usable as anything from 0-9 for the serial number at the end, is now reserved exclusively for a 1 or 2.

Not likely to be an issue anywhere, except Dublin and even then not for a good few years. Surely a month system (0123456789AB or similar) would have helped spread it out even more as well as using the space on a plate more efficiently?

So we are in the middle of the worst recession in a lifetime , people have less money , the boom days are gone , we have been saddled with incredible levels of debt ,unemployment is rocketing and emigration is growing rapidly m and they introduce a new system to REDUCE the volume of cars sold this month…..go figure…

Each country except for Ireland has got no year shown on car plate and no one cares. There is only good or bad drivers across the world having no affect on car sales
