NO INJURIES HAVE BEEN reported following a collision between two planes on the ground at JFK International Airport in New York last night.

A large Air France A380 jet bumped into a smaller Comair plane while taxiing on the runway, lifting the lighter aircraft and spinning it around 90 degrees, according to ABC News.

The Air France plane was preparing to take off for Paris, while the second plane had just landed from Boston. The A380 is one of the largest commercial planes.

Both planes were damaged and the Chicago Tribune reports that investigators are trying to determine why the pilots were not aware of their proximity to one another.

A lot of sore necks in that CRJ aircraft.

And that’s why you always keep your seat belt on until the aircraft has come to a complete stop and the seat belt sign has been switched off. Im sure we have all seen it……people getting out of the seat grabbing for bags when the aircraft is still taxiing.

  • Dont pilots know there wingspan? So he should have seen that. And the Height the other plane left the ground and the force it spun could have killed boarding passengers! But air France are having an awful time!

    • On some aircraft the pilots can’t see their own wing tips. The accident report should find out what went wrong anyway.

Of course they know their wingspan but we are talking about the A380 here. Its a massive aircraft and almost impossible to judge distance. A380 wingspan is almost 80m. If you drove a car that was that wide would you be sure as to the exact clearance from an obstacle?

Anyway, my point above is merely academic. Reason being, I suspect the CRJ was waiting to park on stand but no marshaller was present so the pilots elected to “hold short” of the stand but neglected to inform the tower.

The tower would have assumed the CRJ was on stand and gave taxi instructions to the A380. The pilots of the A380 were probably busy doing Before take off checklist and having been given taxi instructions carried out those instructions and may have not been aware the CRJ had stopped short.

Purely my opinion based solely on the video above.

    • It would seem AirFance was in the centre of their taxiway. Nothing more you can do. It may be the fault of the smaller aircraft or that of someone that told it to stay there..it’s hard to see on the video if its parked or moving slow.
Airfrance looks to be taxiing quite fast also…
