GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING,TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #TEXAS: Police in Texas have said that between 5 and 15 people have been killed in the explosion at a fertiliser plant overnight. At least 160 other people were injured in the massive explosion, and police have said that the number of people killed is likely to rise.

2. #DEATH AND TAXES: A soldier at a military barracks in Dublin has been sent a request for the property tax – for his entire military barracks. The letter adds to the growing list of examples where the Revenue Commissioners have sent demands for property taxes to the wrong person.

3. #INSOLVENCY: Borrowers struggling to keep up with their debt repayments may be forced to move house, sell a car or change their childcare arrangements in order to qualify for the State’s new insolvency and debt resolution procedures. New guidelines published today outline the criteria used to define a ‘reasonable’ standard of living.

4. #BUDGET: Cuts to welfare, health and transport have been confirmed in the government’s revised budget figures. Despite the cuts in some areas, other departments like Public Expenditure and Reform and Environment will be given more than had been originally forecast.

5. #RHINO ROBBERY: Masked raiders made off with half a million euro worth of rhino heads and horns from the National Museum Archive in Swords, Dublin last night. The three men tied up a security guard and spent an hour loading up their haul into a white van. Gardaí are appealing to the public for information.
