GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start your day.

Storm Bram

1. Twenty-five thousand homes, farms, and businesses are without power this morning in the aftermath of yesterday’s Storm Bram.

The ESB said it would restart works to restore power to those affected “at first light” this morning.

Flu season

2. Government is bracing for “significant” hospital system pressure this winter due to the co-circulating of flu, Covid-19 and RSV.

Almost 2,000 new flu cases were reported in the week ending 29 November, double the previous week, ministers were told yesterday.

Butter

3. Does the US actually import 80% of its butter from Ireland?

Despite the figure circulating on social media, the answer is no.

New pension scheme

4. The employers of over 300,000 workers have signed up for the auto-enrolment pension scheme in the first week of registration opening.

However, with 771,000 employees initially eligible for enrolment in the My Future Fund scheme, that means less than half are logged on the registration portal just three weeks out from the new scheme launching.

Teacher shortage

5. Representatives from some of Ireland’s biggest teacher unions will today appeal to TDs and Senators to make it more accessible to become a qualified teacher in order to address the large shortage in the sector.

Culture cards

6. Young people turning 18 in 2026 have faced a very different set of challenges to earlier generations.

This morning, TD Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere writes that new 18-year-olds should each be given €100 to spend as they choose on arts, culture or sports.

Courts

7. A man in his late 50s has gone on trial accused of sexually assaulting a teenager a number of times 21 years ago.

The Circuit Criminal Court heard that the allegations took place on a series of dates during 2004 when the then-15-year-old was involved in a community organisation where the man was employed at a location in the south of the country.

Housing crisis

8. The Department of Housing has deleted a video featuring advice to young people on moving back in with their parents from its social media channels after “negative online commentary”.

In a statement to The Journal, a department spokesperson said it had removed the video from its X account featuring campaign content from Spunout and The Housing Agency “after feedback from the young people themselves”.

Body-cams

9. Gardaí are asking the public whether body-worn cameras should be rolled out to the whole force.

Body-worn cameras are video and audio-recording devices that can be attached to a garda’s clothing. The garda can choose to switch on the device if they want to record something.
