Achill Island Coast Guard still working to recover student's body

The 22-year-old Finnish student tragically fell from a cliff in Achill Island, Co Mayo, last Thursday.

ACHILL ISLAND COAST Guard is today continuing attempts to recover the body of a young Finnish student who fell from a cliff on Thursday afternoon.

The alarm was raised shortly after midday on Thursday by a friend of the 22-year-old man, who had witnessed his fall from the cliff at Atlantic Drive.

The search continued on Thursday and Friday.

Malin Head Coast Guard said last night that rescue teams could see his body on several occasions over the past number of days, however they could not reach him due to inclement sea and weather conditions.

Today, a spokesman for the Coast Guard told TheJournal.ie that conditions this afternoon were still too rough to allow searchers into the water and that a net was being deployed.

The victim’s parents are in Finland and have been informed of the tragic accident.
