Driver doing 217km/h on Derry road was 'heading for a Chinese takeaway'

Police in Derry stopped a number of cars in the Kilrea area on Friday night.

A MOTORIST WHO was caught driving almost double the speed limit on a Derry road said they were on their way to collect a Chinese takeaway.

PSNI officers from the roads policing branch said that on Friday evening they measured a red Mitsubishi Evo going at 135m/h, or 217km/h, on the A26 Lisnevenagh Road, Kilrea.

“This is nearly double the permitted speed for the A26 dual carriageway,” the PSNI said in a Facebook post.

“The driver’s explanation: They were heading for Chinese takeaway!!

“This driver will also have their day in court and could possibly face disqualification,” the post said.

Police also stopped the driver of a blue BMW in the Kilrea area because their system had no record of the vehicle’s insurance.

In the same Facebook post, the PSNI said that upon speaking to the driver they learned that they had no insurance and were currently disqualified from driving.

“The driver will now have their day in court to explain their actions,” the spokesperson said, adding that the car was seized.

While waiting on recovery for the seized vehicle, police stopped a Black Seat Leon, which also had no valid insurance policy.

They said the driver admitted to only holding a Provisional driving licence and had no L plates on display.

The car was seized.
