Army bomb disposal team called out to fourth alert today

Suspicious device discovered in Sallynoggin, Dublin.

THE ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL team has been called out to a fourth security alert in Dublin today when a suspicious device was discovered in a laneway in the Sallynoggin area.

The team examined the device at the scene and a number of homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

A controlled explosion was carried out on the device and it has since been declared a hoax by the Defence Forces team.

Earlier today, the team was called out to Tallaght twice to deal with reports of suspicious devices and to the Israeli embassy. The security alert at the embassy was later declared a false alarm.

Today’s alerts bring the total number of the Defence Forces team call-outs to 133 so far this year. The army bomb disposal squad has made 64 improvised explosive devices safe in 2012.

Where are all the right wingers crying for the blood of these Public Servants to be spilled? This is the 113th time this year the Army has been called out and it is only August, and there are still muppets out there asking ”what do we need an Army for”?

Nikolas I am not venting or directing any anger towards you but if you read your first posting again you will note a dismissive tone that reflects much a laissez faire attitude towards this menace and these moronic thugs. We all know who is responsible and to correct your understanding there have been arrests of known Republicans in the last few months when their car was stopped and viable devices found hidden in the interior of the vehicle.
Whether this is about so called Territorial arguments or just a little side earner we have already had one victim too many this year and I have a problem with your thinking about the randomness of the locations. First off the Gardai have released nothing to suggest that this is merely a series of mind games. If the devices are valid they are placed with the intention of causing injury and death. These bastards need to be stopped. I have no doubt whatever but that people who read these pages and belong to a so called Republican Movement know who they are and where they live but handing those details to the Gardai would be a step too far…!
So much for a Nation once again.

You’ve confused what I wrote with what you thought you read, coloured by the train of thought you were already travelling on. You made an assumption that was wrong, you lashed out without thinking and you were extremely offensive to me, implying that not only did I find amusement in what is happening, but that I am a former terrorist. Instead of telling you to go f*ck yourself, which was my first reaction and a reply I still think would be fully justified, I apologised for any misunderstanding and au clarified my original comment. I am not interested in your mealy-mouthed backtracking. You have a couple of dignified responses. You can do the equivalent of shaking my hand and burying the hatchet, or you can walk away by not replying. You made an assumption, you were wrong, and I’m quite sure you would be just as angry and offended as I am if the tables were turned and I had levelled the very same accusations against you.

And to address your point that viable devices, ie bombs, were found in the possession of some republican dissidents, either there is a single group of extremely busy bomb makers, or all of the bombs turning up are not made by the same people. That’s another assumption. If it is known that all the bombs are made in a similar manner, then we can make the assumption that they COULD come from the same source. We don’t have that information so we can’t make that assumption. The bigger question is “why”. As I’ve said twice before, I don’t believe that paramilitary or organised crime theories add up. In the vast majority of cases, we, as the general public, have not heard of any group, political or criminal, issuing demands or taking responsibility. Bomb threats are a means of leverage, but no-one’s claiming that leverage. If you disagree with my theory, then say so and give a counter-argument. Hurling accusations and veiled insults is more a form of bullying, slapping someone down, then it is a means to show someone’s faulty logic.

I would be seriously worried about this, no so-called anti-terror laws here yet , i hope and pray no false flags are coming to this country.

I’ve nothing to back it up with, but I’m convinced there’s people out there who are making a sport out of this. First you build a bomb. It doesn’t need to really be a bomb, it just needs to look like what an average person would expect a bomb to look like. Next you plant it somewhere, making sure it’s just hidden enough to maybe be hidden, but obvious enough to guarantee that said average person could not fail to see it as something suspicious. Then wait to see how long it takes to be found and to turn up as a news story. Maybe there’s a scoreboard somewhere. I’m probably wrong, but this latest rash of “maybe bombs” seems too random, there doesn’t seem to be any mention of who they’re targeting. Anyone any ideas?

Nikolas it seems you belong to a different planet. This year alone in excess of one hundred viable explosive devices have been disarmed in the year to date by the Army Bomb Disposal Squad and one device took nearly the entire hand from a young lad in County Wicklow some weeks ago. Your posting is ignorant insensitive and mischievous. It is also grossly insulting to all those men and women who serve this Nation by putting their lives at risk for the safety of the wider Community from the thugs behind this evil behaviour.
I have argued for some time that the manufacturers of these devices have years of experience and haven’t just picked up a do it yourself guide from the Internet. I guess most will know that those who make such an argument have a specific background that they are desperately trying to protect.
We read their contributions here every day!

@ Mick – first off, please calm down a little and let me have my say. I did not mean to and do not mean to make light of the situation. What I am saying is that the gurriers who are making and planting these devices may be making light of the situation. I’ll explain why I think this in a moment. First I want to make very clear that I have the utmost respect for the Irish army. I have had the pleasure and honour to know some of them, both officers and rank-and-file, and they do an invaluable service to us all, whether peacekeeping, bomb disposal or helping with floods, etc. they don’t complain about it, they just get in with it and they don’t go looking for the respect they deserve but rarely are given. Given our history, bombs are a particularly callous, cowardly and malign way to bring violence to the lives of people who have done nothing wrong and have more than enough sh*t to deal with as it is. I did not and do not condone this spate of bomb threats, you have misunderstood me, and frankly I am offended that you should think this. So don’t vent your rage onto me.

Moving past snarling at each other, I don’t believe the bombs in Dublin are intended to be detonated. I think this because:
    1. The locations of the bombs tend to be random and do not correspond, either in time or place, with organised criminal activity. There are no obvious targets, which there would be if the aim was assassination.
    2. Very few of these bombs actually explode. If the intention was for these things to explode and kill people, the builders of them are not very good at building them, and so their paymasters would have run out of patience by now and would have found a different means to maim and kill. This hasn’t happened. There’s still more and more bombs appearing that are not functional.
    3. The
Bombs are not well disguised or well hidden. I am in no way insulting the army, but the army will be called in after the devices are discovered. If the intent was to detonate the devices, they would not be so easy found and so easily identified as “possible” bombs.
The two questions I want answered are “why?” and “are all the devices made in the same way, or do they seem to have been made by unrelated people using unrelated methods?” I believe that some people are making a game of this, and if so, it’s a sick and disgusting game. I don’t expect an apology from you, but I do expect you to think about what I’ve written and not let your temper get away from you.
