Woman in her 70s dies after getting into difficulty off Wicklow coast

A second person was also recovered from the water and taken to hospital.

A WOMAN IN her 70s has died after getting into difficulty in the sea near Magherabeg beach in Co Wicklow.

Emergency services were alerted of the incident at around 2pm yesterday.

Greystones and Wicklow Coast Guard units attended the scene, as well as the Dublin-based Coast Guard helicopter R116.

A Wicklow RNLI Lifeboat was also on the scene, where responders faced difficult sea conditions due to Storm Claudia.

A search was commenced, and gardaí said the woman’s body was recovered from the water at approximately 4pm.

A second person who was also in the water was rescued and taken to hospital.

The woman’s body was brought to the mortuary at St Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown, where a post-mortem examination will take place in the coming days.

Gardaí said a file will be prepared for the Coroner’s Court.
