Traffic on the M50 this morning The Journal

'Major event' on M50 and other travel disrupted by flooding from Storm Chandra

A number of train stations have been closed and roads have been flooded.

LAST UPDATE | 2 hrs ago

A ‘MAJOR EVENT’ has been declared on the M50 between Junction 13 at Dundrum and 12 at Firhouse in Dublin due to heavy rain causing flooding.

Travel on roads, by rail and ferry has been disrupted due to the downpours.

Local authorities in Louth, Dublin and Wexford have reported flooding with other areas also believed to be affected.

A Status Yellow wind warning for the entire country began at 3am and will remain in place until 11pm, with a separate Status Yellow rain warning is in effect for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford.

Roads

The northbound stretch of the M50 between Dundrum and Firhouse is still closed, Transport Infrastructure Ireland spokesperson Seán O’Neill told RTÉ Radio this morning.

He asked any motorists who need to use that part of the M50 to delay their journeys if possible.

“We have crews on site, we’re dealing with the incident, but I do not have a time yet on when the issue will be cleared,” O’Neill said.

O’Neill told RTÉ’s David McCullagh that the road between Junction 13 Dundrum and Junction 12 Firhouse is still closed northbound due to flooding.

“We have tanker trucks there now, pumps have been going, we’re trying to obviously deal with the situation there,” he said.

There has also been significant flooding on the M11 at Junction 8, with crews working to resolve it.

Dodder Road in south Dublin is impassable because the river has overflown.

Dublin Bus said that diversions have been put in place on a number of routes due to road closures.

Trains

A number of train stations were closed this morning in Dublin and surrounding areas and there are still major delays on northern commuter trains into the capital.

There is currently a tree on the line between Raheny and Killester, which is adding to delays.

The Rosslaire line is completely closed, Irish Rail said.

Elsewhere, Irish Rail has warned that there are generally delays of up to 44 minutes due to flooding.

Ferries

A number of ferry services have also been impacted by the stormy conditions.

Three Stena Line sailings due to travel from Dublin to Holyhead have been cancelled so far today, as well as two ferries due to travel from Rosslare to Fishguard.

Five ferries due to depart from Belfast have also been cancelled.

A Stena Line spokesperson told The Journal that “a number of changes” to their scheduled ferry services are expected throughout the day.

Flights

There has been “some disruption” at Dublin Airport, but things appear to be improving, according to DAA spokesperson Graeme McQueen.

“The weather is certainly much improved here at Dublin Airport,” he told RTÉ’s David McCullagh, adding that it was a “pretty quiet” day at the airport with 55,000 passengers due to travel through.
