6 stunning statement armchairs that will bring focus to any living room

Pull up a chair and check out these lounging picks.

GOOD NEWS FOR interior lovers with an aversion to tech – gone are the days that the television has to take pride of place in the living room. If you’re looking for a break from the screen, then statement furniture is your friend and creates a whole new focal point in the room.

A statement piece’s job is to stand out. In this regard they run of the risk of becoming tiresome quite quickly. Whether you’re making a statement with lighting, tables or chairs, our advice is to shop around. Don’t just buy that crazy piece for the hell of it – you’ll probably have to live with it for a long time.

This week, we’ve done some of the perusing for you and have rounded up six armchairs that all have something to say. With designs in all shapes and sizes, grab some inspiration and see if it’s time to let your seating take the floor.

1. Space saver: For the smaller house or apartment where space is at a premium, choose something that’s easy on the eye and doesn’t take up too much precious floor space. Here, @cllinteriordesign creates a focal point with matching armchairs that draw in the tones of the artwork, so they complement each other and work together in the room seamlessly.

DFS have clearly listened to any small space woes with their Capsule Collection. This Lull chair is cosy, modern and unusual enough to add interest to your seating arrangement.

2. Velvet wonder: Loved for its soft finish and elegant aesthetic, velvet has no doubt seen a resurgence in the last few years, covering almost every interior piece, of late, from couches to cushion covers. Team coloured velvet with an unusual shape, as seen here from @housetohome_sussex Instagram account, and that empty corner in the living room becomes an instant, interesting reading nook.

Copy the look with this scalloped chair by Oliver Bonas – an online store that’s always on top of it when it comes to trends.

3. Oldie but goodie: Ok, you’ve probably seen this one around for the last few years but it’s hard to beat a modern classic when it comes to creating a focal point. With its high back and grandiose curves, the STRANDMON from IKEA creates instant impact. The beauty of it is that it’s quite hard to get sick of.

We love how @projekt_dom has styled this considered room and has clearly stuck to a colour palette they love. That’s right, a statement piece doesn’t have to be garish in colour – here shape and style are just as impactful.

4. Fabric fan: Traditional styles ramped up with loud and proud material make an instant statement, as seen here on @lenleys Instagram account. In a room that’s primarily monochrome, covering an armchair in an unusual, standout pattern will instantly draw the eye.

You can find Duresta-covered armchairs at Arnotts.

5. Join the club: One of the best things about statement furniture is that it allows you to add art and function to your space in one fell swoop – as seen here with Italian design house Dimore Studio’s playful take on the classic club chair, featured by @edit.online_.

Circular backs (a tell-tale style of the club chair) create a sense of protection and comfort while being loud enough to get attention. And, art and function certainly combine in the case of KARE Design’s Bold club chair available at Woo Design.

6. Just wing it: Add some grandeur and a splash of colour with a brightly coloured, wing-backed armchair. In @aliceinscandiland‘s lounge, yellow and pink tones instantly welcome spring and summer while the black and white tones avoid brightness overload.

Cocooning and curling up with a good book is what many of us look forward to after a long day, and that’s exactly what we can imagine doing with this Kubrick armchair from Made.com.
