EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE working to free people who are trapped on the big wheel at Galway’s Christmas market.

Tonight was the opening of Galway’s Christmas market, with the official launch at 6pm as the Christmas lights were turned on.

Firefighters are using cherry pickers to free people who are trapped atop the wheel which is located in Eyre Square in the centre of the city.

One man told RTÉ News that his daughter had been trapped up there for around an hour.

“The wheel simply just stopped,” he said.

Gardaí are also at the scene, and are directing traffic with local diversions in place.
