THE DETAILS OF Budget 2026 have been announced – and while there weren’t many surprises, overall government spending will increase by €9.4 billion. However, most of that won’t be going directly into people’s pockets.

Cigarettes are going up by 50c a pack, the rent tax credit has been extended to the end of 2028, and there’s a permanent cut to college fees (though students will still be paying more than they were last year).
