AN INQUEST INTO the deaths of five people who lost their lives when the car in which they were travelling slipped into the water from the pier in Buncrana, Co Donegal, will begin today.
Sean McGrotty (49), his sons Mark (12) and Evan (8), his partner’s mother Ruth Daniels (59), and her daughter Jodie Lee (14) all lost their lives in the tragedy.
The only survivor of the accident was Sean’s youngest child, four-month-old daughter Rionaghac-Ann.
She was saved by former footballer and local man David Walsh, who swam out to the car in an effort to save the family.
The inquest will hear from witnesses this morning, with a view to better understanding what happened during the incident.
It will take place in Buncrana Courthouse.
