OVER THE WEEKEND, The Journal’s Sophie Finn reported that the growing popularity of buy now, pay later (BNPL) services such as Klarna has seen them increasingly promoted online and in physical shops in Ireland.
Online discussion around these services has also grown, from TikTok clips that trivialise using the services to posts warning that they can become a ‘debt trap’.
Many consumers may view Klarna or other BNPL services as a tempting option when buying clothes and electronics, particularly where payments are advertised as interest-free. However, missed payments can result in additional fees and may end up being referred to debt collectors.
A spokesperson for the Money and Advice Budgeting Service told The Journal that some consumers are “not fully aware that they are entering into a credit agreement at the point of purchase when they opt for BNPL”.
So, today we’re asking: Have you ever used a buy now, pay later service?
