THE INSPIRATIONAL CORK woman Joanne O’Riordan helped to switch on the Christmas lights in her home city last night.
She was joined by Santa and Lord Mayor Cllr John Buttimer for Cork’s Christmas lights event on Patrick’s St, which saw thousands of lights turned on in the city.
The event included on-stage performances by Cork Chamber Choir, the Cork Youth Orchestra and the Cork Male Voice Choir. There was also a special visit from Santa Claus as well as characters from Cork Opera House Christmas panto, Alice in Wonderland, and The Everyman Theatre panto, Little Red Riding Hood.
Lord Mayor Cllr John Buttimer said:
I am delighted to welcome everyone to this symbolic event which sees the beginning of the Christmas season in Cork. This is the start of a whole range of activities planned for the City, including the wonderful “A Cork Christmas Celebration” on the Grand Parade opening on November 30.
The Limerick christmas lights were also officially switched on last night at Thomas Street, Limerick City by Mayor Gerry McLoughlin – who was helped by Dustin the Turkey and local singer Leeane Moore. Entertainment included the Limerick Gospel Choir and the Pearly Whites Band.
