THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION will sit for the final time as part of its current program in a couple of weeks but tonight it will hold the first in a series of public meetings to ask people to help ‘set the agenda’ on the next issues to be tackled.
So far the Constitutional Convention have made a series of recommendations to government on issues such as lowering the voting age and extending voting rights to Irish citizens abroad. They have also rejected a number of proposals including shortening the presidential term and changing the electoral system in general elections.
Last week the convention said that was looking to the public to direct its final phase and tonight it will hold the first of the meetings in University College Cork.
The convention said that the meetings will have “no rigid agenda or narrow focus” and are being held instead to provide two way communications with the public.
The chairman of the convention Tom Arnold will address the crowd and talk through the work done so far with members of the public then asked to give their ideas of what they would like to see addressed in the upcoming plenary meetings.
These ideas may be fleshed out a bit and members of the convention can answer questions that the public might have and vice versa.

A Limerick meeting has also been added as a result of demand from the public but spokesperson for the convention said that logistics around the Limerick meeting are still being worked out.
Tonight’s meeting be evening at 7.30pm in The Aula Maxima (Great Hall) in UCC.
The Convention on the Constitution will hold its next full session on the first weekend in November and will discuss the removal of the offence of blasphemy from the Constitution.
