PET OWNERS IN Cork city are being warned to be vigilant after a series of attacks on cats by youths handling dogs.
Cork’s Cat Hospital has warned that gangs of young boys are stealing pets as bait for their dogs.
“Please be aware that there are people in Mayfield area actively looking for cats to harm,” a post on the hospital’s Facebook reads.
The two cats pictured in the post were apparently rescued from “men who wished to harm them”.
One Cork woman has described how she saw up to six children set two greyhound-type dogs on a stray kitten that her father had been feeding regularly.
The incident happened at around 7.45pm on Tuesday evening.
Speaking to the Neil Prendiville Show on Cork’s Red FM Stephanie O’Connor said that her mother heard a commotion outside their home in Gurranabraher on the city’s northside.
“She looked out the window and saw three young fellas on the wall, clapping and cheering and giggling, and there were two greyhound or lurcher-type dogs ripping a kitten apart,” Stephanie said.
She was banging at the window and screaming and they just didn’t care.
The kitten was apparently a stray that Stephanie’s father had befriended and was feeding regularly. The youths remained where they were until Stephanie’s brother saw them off.
She described her mother as being “traumatised” following the experience, and said that the children in question, who are aged no more than 12 or 13, have been all over the north of the city looking for pets to steal.
There’s about six of them, and they had been looking in the garden before. When they finally left they just carried on, like that’s one down let’s get onto the next one.
“A friend of mine saw them holding a cat by the tail and running up to the dogs with it. It’s sick. I don’t know what to say or think,” Stephanie added.
There have been a spate of incidents of animal cruelty in Cork in recent months. In August a small dog died from his injuries after having his throat slashed and being stabbed in the back.

Named and shamed, what type of parents are raising kids like this? Maybe a trip to the zoo, a big cat and cage would educate them?
I agree Stephen. If they are capable of this at 12 years of age what will they be like in a few years.

Those children are a product of their environment. Somebody planned and built the ghettoes in which they were raised.
Adults would have shown them “coursing” – which is another educational experience they could have done without.
My point is that idle Twittery calling for murder of children who are raised in such a way does very little to solve a problem.
Every day, every where people are cruel to animals. Calling for the death of the perpetrators is helping no one… But you will get a few green thumbs and you might feel better for a while…
Think a little deeper about why this is happening and what you would like to see happen to stop children from growing to be this cruel. Maybe…

It is just an educated guess but fact is in many of these estates a lot of women have 5+ kids and not the slightest clue who the father is. These kids usually grow up in the very same estate where they engage in sexual relationships with people from that estate! Impossible to tell if you getting it on with your half brother or sister, isn’t it?

although the anger puts me in Conor’s state of mind, I think the only real solution is proper jail time for animal cruelty. I know there’s a section of society that laugh at this but it’s time for us to put protections on animals that we have for people. Sick abuse like this usually is an indication of a sick mind that will do more things in the future…probably moving on to people.

This is a snapshot of our society breaking down. Children’s behaviour is the DIRECT result of their surroundings and value system (or lack there of). The mistake we will come to regret, is to just punish the behaviour either through the very over burdened justice system or through some of the more direct vigilantly esque approach as suggested above.
We must address the breakdown of the family unit (however that looks in modern society) followed by the breakdown in the local community.
Rearing our children is building the society of the future. When we are old and vulnerable in our homes because of the actions of a “criminal Class” rampaging the country. We must reflect on wether we, the functioning responsible members of our communities did enough either person at or through local action or local political activity (not just complaining) to address social issues NOW amounts the collective children of of communities who will be the functioning adults of our later years. People who we will rely on to work and build careers to fund our pensions and who in turn will contribute to solving the social issues, which if unaddressed will continue to Fester.
So let’s not throw our future away by only dealing in retribution and not addressing the root causes.

That poor kitten. There are barely any penalties for adults who are charged with cruelty to animals so doubtful anything will happen these children. It’s disgraceful.

One of the first signs of a psychopath (many serial killers) is cruelty to animals. These acts are heinous. Are kids being brought up with no humanity on purpose.

Strange how nobody knows who these children are or who their parents are
The “blooding” of greyhounds on live cats is an integral part of hare coursing in Ireland…aside from the fact that coursing itself is very similar to what those disturbed youths did to the kitten…our animal welfare laws are inadequate to effectively tackle animal cruelty and exempt some forms of “recreational” of field sport” cruelty (hare coursing, foxhunting, cub hunting, digging out of foxes that seek refuge from a hunt) from prohibition.
