Emergency services called to multi car crash in the Jack Lynch Tunnel near Cork city

It comes as a major security operation is ongoing as European Union Commissioners.

GARDAÍ AND FIRE Brigade are at a multi-car crash in the Jack Lynch Tunnel, a major road link outside Cork city.

The incident is ongoing, but sources have said that three to four cars have crashed inside the tunnel which crosses underneath the River Lee Estuary, just to the east of the city, close to the M8 motorway.

It comes as a major security operation is ongoing as European Union Commissioners and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are due to arrive in Cork city in the coming days.

A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of a multi-vehicle collision at the Jack Lynch Tunnel, Cork city, that occurred this afternoon.

“As this is an ongoing incident no further information is available.”

This is a developing story, and we will update as more information emerges.
