Starmer says pubs to stay open till early hours for England's game against Mexico

There had been growing calls to give the people what they want and in this case Starmer has delivered.

KEIR STARMER HAS made some very unpopular decisions since becoming British prime minister, but today he’s announced something that is likely to make most people happy, even as he heads out the door of 10 Downing Street.

English pubs will be allowed to stay open until the early hours of Monday morning to allow football fans to enjoy England’s World Cup knockout game against hosts Mexico, Starmer announced in a video posted online today.

“So I know lots of people are making their plans,” Starmer said.

“If you’re planning to watch it in the pub, that is great and it’s really good for pubs as well.

“Come on England!”

England will face Mexico in the Round of 16 at the Fifa World Cup after beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 on Wednesday.

There is already a measure in place in the UK that has let pubs stay open until 2am to show World Cup games, but Monday’s match kicks off at 1am, meaning it would still be on when the pubs close.

There had been growing calls to give the people what they want and in this case Starmer has delivered, although with a 74% disapproval rating, the same can hardly be said for his premiership more broadly.
