- The EU Farm Chief has raised the money on offer to farmers struck by the E.coli crisis in Germany from €150 million to €210 million.
- A review of the taxi industry is to be carried out by the Public Transport Minister, with an aim to “clean up” some of the practices which have developed following deregulation, Alan Kelly said.
- A flight refund website has apologised to Ryanair over claims that the airline had ‘hoarded’ fees. AirTaxRefund.com faced legal action after claiming the airline unlawfully held on to taxes and charges for cancelled trips.
- The Greek unemployment rate has soared by 40 per cent on last year, with the jobless rate rising to 16.2 per cent in March.
- A 30-year-old man will appear in court later tonight, charged in connection with the discovery of a man’s body in Cappabeg, Co Clare yesterday. The body of 21-year-old Eoin Ryan was discovered stuffed in a barrel on a farm near Barefield. He had died of head injuries.
- Scientists from UCD and Trinity College researching Alzheimer’s disease believe they may have made a breakthrough in developing drugs to help block the onset of the disease.
- The Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly says that complaints to her office increased by 30 per cent last year in comparison with 2009 - with almost half of all complaints relating to the civil service.
- Ireland has beaten France and Britain to take the award for “highest client-satisfaction” in a European destination by industry magazine readers.
- A group of lost climbers have been rescued in Wicklow after mountain rescue teams used the co-ordinates from the hikers’ GPS-enabled phones to pinpoint their location.
- EU data protection officials have voiced concerns over a new Facebook facial recognition feature, which uses software to suggest name tags for newly-uploaded photos. Regulators are concerned about the automatic tagging of photos without a person’s prior consent.
- It’s not unusual to get a tattoo that reminds of your nearest and dearest – but what about all 152 of them? Well, that’s what one woman did when she gave her favourite Facebook friends a permanent place in her heart… and all down her arm.
