Derry Girls wins International Emmy for Best Comedy Programme

Sister Michael would be proud.

THE FINAL SERIES of Derry Girls has won the International Emmy for Best Comedy Programme alongside Vir Das: Landing.

The awards were announced at a ceremony in New York last night.

Derry Girls follows a group of teenagers growing up during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1990s, before the Good Friday Agreement was signed.

The third and final series of the much-loved programme was broadcast in 2022.

Derry Girls was written and created by Lisa McGee, who accepted the award last night, and starred Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Louisa Harland and Dylan Llewellyn.

The programme was produced by Hat Trick Productions.

Derry Girls shared the comedy award with Netflix special Vir Das: Landing, where the comedian explores his childhood in India.

No comments allowed on the COP28 political backslapping convention again where the protagonists all fly in on private jets to lecture the serfs about their excessive carbon footprint. Free the news for everyone my hoop

@Michael McGrath: I don’t know whether they fly in on private jets or not. I do know that it is essential that world leaders concentrate on cutting emissions, and that the potential good that can come from gatherings like this will vastly outweigh the fuel used by attendees to get to them.

You need to look at the big picture instead of always obsessing about relatively trivial details.

@Michael McGrath: Are you imagining that they could take a month off & sail there instead? I’m sure their citizens have more claims on their time than that. It’s a vital issue, but hardly the only one they need to manage. If you want a free holiday by air yourself, you’ll need to do more for your community than complaining about the cost of flights abroad for yourself. We spent long enough on this island having to commute to Britain to get any passenger flights to Europe.

@Brian Dunne: Yea a bit hit n miss. Some episodes were classic tho – like Across the Barricades where they’re meant to shout out the things that unite us

@Brian Dunne: I thought it was awful. Pantomime level stereotypes. Why are younger Irish women always portrayed as angry, smart arsed, heavy drinking bullies and the older women as ultra religious, wooden spoon carrying ranters?

@Brendan O’Brien: pardon me if I pay no heed to what you say because you are a paid govt narrative cheerleader on this platform ready on any and every article that people have an alternate view. The fact that you say you don’t know that they fly in private jets or not says all I need to know about you. If and when they start making meaningful contributions in these summits instead of riding the back off the normal person for the sins of the very few I’ll start believing in this. People driving cars have little or no effect on CO2 emissions, cows/ cattle absolutely no effect on emissions. Cruise ships, private yachts, military complex, private flying, massive houses, all of these have a big impact on emissions but guess what, all exempt so you will have to excuse me if I call b.s on COP
