CHRISTMAS DINNER IS over, leftovers are being enjoyed and presents have been opened. It’s finally time to sit back, put your feet up and relax.

And what better way to unwind with the whole family than by watching Disney and Pixar’s latest release, Soul?

The new animated film, which is available now on Disney+, follows the story of Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) after one small misstep takes him from the busy streets of New York City to The Great Before, a special land where new souls get their personalities, interests and quirks before they go to earth.

Here he meets 22 (voiced by Tina Fey), a soul who has never understood the appeal of human life. Determined to return to his life, Joe tries to show 22 what’s great about living – and learns a thing or two about himself along the way.

Directed by Peter Docter, the man behind Inside Out and Up, Soul maintained a perfect score of 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes in the weeks ahead of its release.

According to the critics’ consensus, Soul is “a film as beautiful to contemplate as it is to behold”. “[It] proves Pixar’s power to deliver outstanding all-ages entertainment remains undimmed.”

In a stand-out line from the film, Gardner says: “Life is full of possibilities. You just need to know where to look.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, co-director Kemp Powers said that the events of 2020 have added even more meaning to the film’s premise.

“We’ve been working on Soul for years, but the film feels timelier now than we ever could have imagined back when we began,” said Powers.

“In a year where everything we know has been turned upside down, we’ve all been forced to find new meaning both in the relationships we have and the small moments that truly make life worth living.”
