Don't send teabags, crisps or chocolate to loved ones in America this Christmas, says An Post

An Post has also warned of the impact of new tariffs on packages.

AN POST HAS asked those with family and friends in the United States not to send them certain foodstuffs, as they are not allowed under current rules.

Teabags, chocolate and crisps are among the items that could be stopped or returned.

An Post has also warned of the impact of new tariffs on packages. The laws, which came into effect on 29 August, mean that all goods worth under $800 will no longer be tax-free.

Goods valued over $2,500 are not accepted, and senders are asked to make sure the declared value of their package is correct.

However, gifts that are under a value of $100 or €85 can continue to be sent as normal with no change.

Only books that are deemed “purely educational” are exempt from tariffs.

There is no change to letters and documents either.

Irish senders can visit the United States International Trade Commission to see the tariffs on specific items.
