E-scooter seized from eight-year-old boy by gardaí in Co Louth

In a post on social media, gardaí said that they “don’t want to be seen as killjoys”.

GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED an e-scooter from an eight-year-old boy who was observed travelling at speeds of up to 30km/h.

In a post on social media, officers from the Dundalk Roads Policing Unit said they stopped the child while on patrol on Tuesday evening.

When they spoke to him, they discovered he was eight years old.

The scooter was seized and his parents were spoken to, gardaí said in the social media post.

“An e scooter in a child’s hands can turn a minute of fun into a lifetime of sorrow,” the post said.

Gardaí added they do not want to be seen as “killjoys” but could not “sit back and watch people (especially kids) be put in harms way”.

Under current regulations, e-scooters may only be used by those aged 16 and over.

Gardaí also encouraged users to wear appropriate safety gear and ensure their lights are working properly.
