Earthquake hits Eastern Indonesia

Indonesian province of Maluku hit by 6.0 strength earthquake.

EASTERN INDONESIA HAS been hit by a strong offshore earthquake.

The earthquake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale and hit the island province of Maluku hours ago. The epicentre was located six miles east of the city of Ambon at a depth of six miles, UPI reports.

Ambon is located 1,500 miles east of Jakarta and has a population of 275,000. Maluku is part of the islands once known as the Spice Islands during colonial times.

The Indonesian meteorological and geophysics agency says no tsunami warning was issued after the quake Sunday, and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, as reported by AP.
