A FORMER GARDA who was travelling at between 86 and 109 km/h when he struck and fatally injured a 45-year-old pedestrian, has been jailed for a total of six years at Dundalk Circuit Court.
Michael Ball (28) from Middletown, Malin Head, Co. Donegal has also been disqualified from driving for 12 years. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment with the last 12 months suspended.
Ball was based at Drogheda garda station at the time of the fatal hit-and-run, but he has since resigned from An Garda Síochána.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Niall MacEneaney on the Rathmullen Road, Drogheda on 17 March 2024 and to failing to remain at the scene and offer assistance.
In a statement this evening, Fiosrú, the office of the police ombudsman, said its family liaison officer continues to liaise with Niall MacEneaney’s family and the Coroners court in advance of a forthcoming inquest into his death.
