‘Extraordinary circumstances’ see a number of sailings between Dublin and Holyhead cancelled

This morning’s 10.15am Stena Line sailing from Dublin to Holyhead had to be diverted to Liverpool, with passengers taken by coach to Holyhead.

A NUMBER OF ferries between Dublin and Holyhead in Wales have been cancelled or delayed due to “extraordinary circumstances”.

In a message to customers yesterday, Irish Ferries said a sailing from Dublin to Holyhead in the early hours was cancelled “due to operational reasons”.

Customers yesterday were advised to book onto a later 7.45 pm sailing, but this too was delayed by up to eight hours due to “extraordinary circumstances”, with Irish Ferries pointing to “berth delays in Holyhead port”.

Further disruptions are expected today, with sailings leaving up to an hour earlier than scheduled.

Meanwhile, there is also disruption to the Holyhead to Dublin route today, with Irish Ferries stating that further updates will follow for later sailings.

A 1.30am Holyhead to Dublin sailing was delayed overnight and the current check-in time is 10am.

Elsewhere, an Irish Ferries sailing from Dublin to Cherbourg which was scheduled for 6.30pm has been cancelled for “operational reasons”.

Over on Stena Line, this morning’s 10.15am sailing from Dublin to Holyhead had to be diverted to Liverpool, with passengers then to be taken by coach to Holyhead.

The 4.30pm sailing from Dublin has been cancelled “due to a technical issue with the vessel in Holyhead”.

Meanwhile, a 4am and 10am Stena Line sailing from Holyhead to Dublin was cancelled this morning and Stena Line advises that its passengers on the 10am sailing can be accommodated on the Irish Ferries service.

However, this transfer is not available for those with cabins and lounges.

Holyhead Port was severely damaged due to Storm Darragh in December 2024 and one port re-opened the following month in January 2025.

The port then re-opened fully in July 2025 – it is the UK’s second busiest passenger port.
